One of Brouwer or Ferland will be exposed in the expansion draft and if it's Brouwer we can only hope that he's taken.

Why? They'll want one of the guys we would be protecting anyways, I'm not sure that getting expansion exempt players in return would really help them that much since they will still have to expose 3-4 really good players, at least.

If they really want one of Lazar or Ferland in return then yeah you don't have to wait I guess.
They won't be trading Nino because they can't protect him though, it'd be because of cap problems. They're problem for protection is on D not F.

Pre Expansion Draft trades are also probably a bit more of a buyers market, as teams would be primarily making moves as they don't want to lose Player X in the ED...so there are teams shopping, but they have to be careful as well as they can only protect so many players too...
less buyers should mean lower asks...
after the ED the pressure reverts to cap reasons, but more teams will probably be buying then too, which might cause the prices to rise.

I don't see Ferland or Lazar even in the equation, I have little doubt their ask would be Bennett. It would hurt, but I would do it if we can negotiate a long term contract with Nino first.

As others have said you maybe don't have Brouwer or maybe (less likely) Ferland. But even with both, wouldn't you play Nino with Monahan and Gaudreau? Isn't the idea that the Flames have someone better than Brouwer on the top line?

No thanks, not me. But I'm one of those that believe Bennett is still going to be a solid two way top 6 center and is following the career development path of guys like Schenn, Kadri, Johansen, etc..

I expect Brouwer to still be on the Flames next year, and under no circumstance do I want him to continue ruining Bennett's development by dragging him down all season again. Also, Brouwer did good in his very limited time on the top line, so I think this combo gives you the best balance and best overall performance. A player like Niederreiter would help get the most out of Bennett.

I personally think Bennett tops out as a physical 50-60 point winger, I think his game is better suited for the wing as it allows him to be more physically engaged and that is when he is at his best. I think Nino is that now but even more physical, so I would definitely pull the trigger on it, but I can understand why people higher on him would be apprehensive.

If Trotz goes, Sutter would be perfect for the Caps

If a coach like Trotz can't do anything with the Caps, why would another defence first coach be any different?

For me I move Frolik to LW and try Brouwer with our possession monsters to see if it snaps him in line.
(Assuming Nino for picks/prospects)
Gaudreau - Monahan - Nino
M. Frolik - Backlund - Brouwer
M Tkachuk - Bennett - Lazar
M Ferland - Jankowski - Chiasson

So if Trotz gets fired. That will be 5 coaches that worked with Ovi. At this point I don't think even Mike Babcock could get it done.
Glen Hanlon
Bruce Boudreau
Dale Hunter
Adam Oates
Barry Tortz

I'd stick with Gully. Watching how the team, and how he grew over the course of the season...it's time to stop looking for the next thing, and realize we're growing from within.

He's not actually a Flames fan, just trying to stir the pot.

Yeah, I'm not keen on Brouwer on the top line (though I'm not as down onn him as some). But there's no way he "ruins" Backlund and Frolik. Of course, that means Frolik gets played out of position.

I think that's the makeup our coaching staff was expecting from our 2nd line to start the year... only when Tkachuk forced them to keep him up, it changed everything.
I also like the way this lineup looks if we can bring in Nino for maybe a pick and Shinkaruk or some such?
