I don't know if goaltending is comparable to the other positions, though. You can afford to be patient and work on your other positions because there's three defensive pairings and four forward lines to juggle players through. One line can struggle because you failed to shore it up, while two other lines click and carry your team, meanwhile that top 6 winger is ripening on the farm for next season.
With goaltending the term "safe is death" comes to mind, especially when you're four years into an otherwise successful rebuild. At a certain point you can't sit back and say "It may not work out and bite us if we go big game hunting" because little game hunting may put you in the same failed position in a couple years.
It's the most difficult position in hockey to successfully fill because it relies on very good to elite playing on a consistent basis to be considered successful and there's only one on the ice at a time, with only two dressing.
There's a reason so many GM's swing hard on goaltending and often miss and it's not because there's 15+ dumb GM's in the league. Meanwhile, we get to sit back and go "Ooooh, why'd they do that" with hindsight and "Why would you risk any of those??!!! That guy's been injured and is 30 years old!!!!!!" because we have no pressure to put a decent team into contender status.

They've got the number two pick, blow the other one and avoid a potential goalie cap disaster.

A buyout of Niemi is just two years at $1.5m - I would say that is very easy to swallow. Keep the pick.

Their defence is still putrid though. Who knew Kris Russell would be that important...

technically we don't know
the .950 might have given up the 2 goals on his first few shots and then gotten a bunch later, the other goalie allowed the same amount of goals we don't know if he would have made the next saves to get him to .950 or not
save percentage is not a good stat on small sample sizes like that

Really hope Tre has a plan, otherwise he should have been all over this.

Not sure Bishop was willing to go to Calgary after the deal-that-wasn't from last season.

He was a pending UFA. You can't force a player to sign with you.

And LA traded the rights to Bishop to Dallas at the request of Bishop.
Calgary was reportedly trying to do the same, but it sounds like Bishop asked to be traded to Dallas as that's where he wanted to sign.

@TSNBobMcKenzie
It's believed Bishop's preference was to be dealt to DAL. BTW, Bishop played junior hockey in Texas.

I was weary about the term he was looking for and anything 5 or longer was concerning to me, so the lower AAV Dallas signed him for is pretty irrelevant for me personally. It does however, seem pretty clear that Treliving wanted Bishop, so it'll be interesting to see how he adjusts.

Bishop would have been a poor fit with Calgary on a six year term. Plus, it would have cost closer to $6 a year to play with the Flames. Thank you to whoever in upper management who meddled with the trade.

Of Bishop would prefer NOT to go to Calgary, since the Flames called off 2 separate trades for him....

Obviously he would take less to play somewhere he really likes (Dallas) instead of some place he doesn't have any reason to have positive feelings for (Calgary). He's a 30 year old American that played 99% of his career in he USA. If I was him I wouldn't want to move to city that is frozen for half the year to finish my career.

Yeah, we better avoid paying good goalies what the market dictates.
We're much better off with below replacement level goaltending on short term deals. That's the ticket to success!
