I can't be worried about his couple of average to flat out bad seasons? But you can definitively call him elite for a couple of great ones?

Agreed. I don't want Bishop taking $5 million in cap space at 36. I'm already petrified of having Gio taking up $6.75 million of cap space in his late 30's. It's not ideal salary cap management to have 8% of your salary cap tied up into two 35+ year old players that are no longer starting or top pairing caliber. Flames aren't near the peak of their current core so I would rather take the pain now than later when they will be in their peak. Signing Bishop to that contract is the exact opposite in that by the time the core is at it's peak Bishop will be a weak link.

You can say the same about a lot of NHL contracts. Perhaps all the GMs think they will get a buyout window again in the next CBA.
Or they realize they might not be a GM for that team in 5-6 years so they don't care about the future as much as fans do.
I think it's a good deal for the Stars as Bishop is one of the best goalies on the market.

So they can bury him in the minors for the back end of the deal. We know Flames ownership hates paying players not to play so I don't think that's something the Flames would ever consider.

Haha. I didn't changed the definition of anything. You just chose to ignore the whole picture by dismissing things like wins and his Conn Smythe worthy playoff run that year.

This doesn't work very well anymore, as he would still count for over $1.0 m on the cap.

You can't bury money in the minors anymore (I believe there is a $900k in cap relief). Flames buried Hagman in the minors and ate half his salary so he could play on the Ducks.

Once a team signs a player to this type of deal they have to be aware that can't escape that cap hit (unless they are okay with smearing players like Lombardi). However they can bury them just to get him off the roster so they aren't taking a roster spot away from a more capable player. For example the Flames couldn't have sent Wideman to the AHL this season even if they wanted to because of his NMC.

A lot more than that actually. If he was put in the minors his cap hit would still be $3,891,667

I don't think Dallas signed Bishop to a 6 year deal with the idea they might be burying 2 or 3 years of that deal in the minors...

Bishop at 36yrs old is fine. Goalies aren't like forwards. They don't slow down the same way and can play well into their late 30s. Especially a goalie like Bishop who depends on his size and positioning more than his athleticism and speed.

Wins take a whole team to produce, and I'm confused... did he win the Conn Smythe? It's not like he was a top 5 goaltender in the playoffs that year.
Unless you have evidence of that other than "made it to the finals."

Like Miller, Luongo, Rinne, Lundqvist, Andersen, Nabokov, Brodeur, Roy just to name a few.

So does save percentage and goals against. The whole team is involved in all of that.
As for the Conn Smythe, if the Bolts had won the Cup it would have been between Bishop, Johnson and Hedman. Everybody knows that, you're just being obtuse now. Two game 7 shut outs, stellar numbers and 13 wins. It was a Conn Smythe worthy playoff performance.
