100% agree. Too much can go wrong there.
Give up assets (I hate this more and more)
Long term and large $ contract
history of Injuries.
We have our up and coming goalies
I have a feeling me may not be as elite (anymore?) as we thought.
All we need is a league average goalie that will get us through the next 2 years. A league average goalie that has steady play. Doesn't play out of his mind like Johnson and Elliot did this past season and then crash and burn like Elliot and Johnson did this past season.

I have to agree. The AAV looks nice, but 6 years isnt and I am still not sold on Bishop.
Totally fine with this. Have fun playing hockey in Texas.

Folks simply can't look at that contract and say the Flames lost out, making a massive assumption that he would have signed for the same amount.
In many ways I'd rather the Flames go big game hunting on the trade market - and land a guy with both strong pedigree and track record and more years ahead of him.
I think we will be surprised who Tre acquires and it won't be one of the major names speculated.

i think this is going to be the case with any goalie that we sign now, including Elliott...
As for our up and coming goalies - that's the hope... that's not a 100% guaranteed that any of them will turn out... I don't think its fair to say you don't think Bishop is elite anymore and simultaneously pin our goaltending future on one of three guys, who have 1 NHL game of experience between them...
its water under the bridge now, but the goaltending market that remains is even more dubious than what Bishop provides imo....

That's a solid deal for the Stars. They should be a lot better next season, but damn @ the money they tied up in goalie's now. Will be interesting to see what they do.

Pads are getting smaller and Bishop is getting older.
Bishop was traded At the end of 2013 for Cory Conacher.
From the 2013-14 season until the 2016-17 season he played in Tampa Bay (4 seasons).
He wasn't considered "elite" in Ottawa or before, he only spent 3 seasons in Tampa (one of which was bad). So, 3 'decent' seasons in a career, makes a goalie "elite" now?
Ben Bishop was never elite.

Quite honestly, there isn't a goalie on the planet not named Price that won't make me feel nervous about starting the season with. Even if the Flames acquired Bishop - the goalie I was pining for - I would still feel somewhat nervous about it. I don't know if it is in my head, or the fact that the Flames have had terrible goaltending now for the last few seasons. I think I must be having some post traumatic syndrome.
I really believed Elliott was a huge coup for the Flames last year.

I think step 1 is: Bribe George McPhee to take one.

You literally just described Bishop. Do you not recognize that?

solid move by the stars. I don't think they are all that concerned about the back half of that contract, as for the next few years, this basically buys them a shot at the western conference.
as a flames fan, i'm not sure what to feel at this point. I do not want elliott back based on his season start and playoff performance. The flames need a dependable goaltending option. at this point, i guess the only option i see that has pedigree we are looking for is fleury.
I'm glad this decision lays on the shoulders of treliving. He doesn't seem gun shy given his trade history, and given the fan base has had such a frustrating time with the goaltending during his tenure, i'm certain he's viewing this as the single highest priority going into the offseason (again.... sigh).

I think the "more years ahead of him" is probably referenced to years in his prime. I realize goaltenders can play well into their 30's but Dallas isn't getting Bishop in his prime years. Tampa got those years.

fair points...
players can become elite after teams trade them however... Kipper or Dubnyk for example.
that said, we'll see how the changes in pads affects bishop in Dallas; no point in speculating, despite it being the offseason, as we'll be able to see the results next season...
it still leaves calgary in a bit of a pinch though... the obvious targets seem to be evaporating, if the MAF rumors to LV are true....
I mean would anyone really be happy re-signing Elliott, especially if we have to give up a 3rd(?) to STL as a consequence of re-signing him?

I'm confused. Doesn't a NMC imply a NTC? Does the NMC just downgrade in the last 3 years to a limited NTC?

Precisely.
Each goalie is different and I don't think that Bishop is on the downside of his career yet, but he likely will be during the contract.
I would prefer the Flames land a big fish who is just entering the prime of their careers - not well into them.

Yeah, I'd rather roll the dice with what the Stars just got thanks.
Hopefully that changes over the next few months, but I doubt whatever we end up getting will be able to provide the stability Bishop will likely provide for Dallas in the coming years.
|
Yes, anyone in their right mind would prefer something over ??????????????????????
But I am confident in what Treliving will bring in as our last line of defence in the offseason. But everyone is all up in arms "Why didnt we get Bishop if the Stars got him for a 4th rounder" Like i said in my last post...Maybe he didn't want to come to Calgary?

Again you are assuming the Flames could have go what the Stars just got.
Which is probably not the case.
