Meh, Oilers led by a young core exceeded season expectations and lost to the Ducks in the second round. Sounds like the Flames two years ago, don't beat your chests too hard. Yeah this series went longer than 2 years ago, congrats on losing better. What a momentous achievement.

Yes, Edmonton's D got better. That is because the 6 man D core they had last year was an absolute joke. The worst non-expansion team defense I can think of off the top of my head.
That doesn't make it a good trade. They way overpaid and got terrible value for a pretty significant asset.
It's like Flames fans arguing that we won the Phaneuf trade. Even if the team actually got better as a result, the simple fact of the matter is they didn't get as much value back as they should have.

Hall is a balls-to-the-wall player who uses his speed and strength to his advantage
RNH is more cerebral, using his hands and edges to work out of tight corners and great vision to set up the play
Yak is more of a darting player with a wicked shot...probably the best on the team. He's got speed, shiftiness and underrated playmaking ability
the 1st overalls are the least of my concern

Hall as an Oiler = Balls to the wall!
Hall as a Devil = Dismissive corsi god.. pass!

I think even most Oiler fans would agree that their path through the playoffs was more unconventional than some of the teams that are still playing. Losing almost every game in the advanced stat category (I think I read the Oilers finished ahead in 2 of the 13 games they played) is not the blueprint for success. A lot has to, and it did, go right for this happen and come away with a victory. Sitting back, while being shelled, hoping you can keep it close while you swing for the fences on your chances doesn't give you the best probability of winning.

That was a trade that posters here had been saying that the Oilers had to make before it was made and an awful trade after it was made. Everyone here couldn't stop posting about how stupid of a player that Hall was and how he would never amount to anything and that the Oilers needed defensemen. The Oilers trade Hall for a #2 Right Handed Defenseman who is on a cheap contract for many years to come and the exact same posters point to this as being an awful trade for Edmonton. They won the trade by giving up the better player but getting the more valuable player.

you effectively called him a useless player. the only thing Hall does well is offensive and even u admit he didn't hell his team in that area. I suppose u didn't physically type out y hall sucks, u just laid out reasons why then walked away.

Because some of my co-workers went out to watch the game last night, and apparently only one cheered against the Oilers. The others were either Oilers fans, or they just went along with it. Apparently the entire bar was full of Oilers supporters.
Same with my kids' school. Half their classmates cheer for the Oilers.
In 1990, you would never see a full bar of people in Calgary cheering for the Oilers. In fact, it was almost unheard for anyone to openly cheer for the Oilers in this city at all, unless they were prepared for relentless chirping from every other bystander.
I don't even recall there being many transplanted Edmontonians in this city in the 80s and 90s. Was there a massive influx in the 2000s or something?
What the f*** happened to this city? How can Oilers fans openly cheer for their team in bars here?
|
I think it just has to do with the fact that Calgary is the transplant city for most of Western Canada. When you live in a regional power city consistently ranked high for livability, people are going to move here and unfortuantely bring their crappy team affiliations with them. Its the same reason we get infested by Rider fans when they're doing well.
More people move from Edmonton to Calgary than the other way around because we're better. The cities that have homogenous sports affiliations are dumpsvilles like Edmonton and Cleveland.
Also, the Oilers are easily the more popular team in Alberta, that battle seems to have been lost in the 80s. As much as we make fun of their 5 cups it makes a difference to winning hearts and minds having those plus Gretzky in your history. The Oilers own the Province from basically Red Deer-north, and even southern cities like Med Hat and Lethbridge are pretty evenly split. Those people all move here for work too, my Oiler buddies are all from Red Deer and Grande Prairie.

I said he didn't improve NJ's offense (which he didn't) and he's an advanced analytics god (which he is due to high volume shooting)

...and the Blues are out now, which shows it was sustainable. That is kind of my point. Very rarely can you ride a wave like through the playoffs for an extended duration as it will catch up to you.
Is the goal to win one series or four?

It's not an advanced stats thing, everyone except Oilers fans thinks that was a laughably bad trade.

Both the 2015 Flames and the 2017 Oilers lost 4 of their last five games against the Ducks. of those final five games both teams lost three in Anaheim and one on home ice.
Yeah, I don't see a spectacular difference.

It doesnt matter, for Oiler fans 'next year' is always 'the year' and theres no convincing them otherwise.
If a decade of some of the most spectacular failure and ineptitude cant worm its way through their thick skulls then nothing can.
