You'd be insane not to pull the trigger on that deal, if offered.

Except that Ovie needs a Johnny in order to be Ovie.

Funny I was just wondering about that this morning. I think its' a no go.
Gaudreau is not a play-off performer and won't help the Caps over the hump. Ovi is not good long term value like John is.
The deal doesn't make sense for either team.

How so?
Old Ovi in decline.
Ovi has become a stationary trigger man.
Ovi's contract is awful.
Johnny makes others better.
Johnny hasn't entered his prime yet.
Johnny's contract is fair for now and could become a deal.
Call me insane then...

Come off it.
He has 11 points in 15 playoff games. Way too early in his career (considering his age) to throw out a blanket statement like that.
Yes, he had a rough go this year. So did former playoff MVP Pat Kane who had the exact same stat line in a series the Hawks were swept in. Rough rounds happen, and don't write off a player's career.

Ovie is 7 years older and costs nearly $3M per season more. It would be a horrible trade for Calgary

His numbers aren't bad overall, and it's not like he was playig for a juggernaut in Philly, so if Tre and his scouts think he can light it up behind this Flames team in GG's system, mine as well give it a whirl I guess.
|
If he hasn't been bad, why is Philly looking for a new goalie?
I don't want ok, I want great.
If ok is good enough, then re-sign Elliott

69 points this year and hit at least 50 goals in his previous 3 seasons. On a contract that takes him to just his age 35 season. $9.5 AAV is on the high end but not ridiculous. Huge marketing star that would increase ticket sales. There's very little chance Ovechkin is traded, and certainly not straight up for Johnny. It would be because they go full rebuild and want a package of high end picks and prospects.

If OK is good enough, sign a free agent who comes with no acquisition cost. Re-signing Elliott costs a 2018 3rd.

If you were Washington maybe.
That would be a horribly stupid trade for the Flames to make.

I agree with this.
He had a good year statistically last year, but with pretty limited action. Prior to that, the Wings always seemed to succeed in spite of him, and not because of him. Detroit was a lot like St. Louis where both teams, even though relatively successful, were always rumoured to be looking for goalie upgrades.

Yeah sure, but ok is not what we're looking for so it's rather moot

I was responding to a person saying Mason has been ok. The point was that pursuing 'ok' is not the answer.
Is this really something that you want to argue about?

As Daryl Sutter would say, good isn't good enough.
Although I totally understand why Treliving dealt for Elliott, this was my concern at the time.
It was a decent shot with low acquisition cost, but in the end, we learned what St. Louis and Ottawa already knew. I think now, it is time to get real though. Either get a sure-fire #1 goalie, or get a young-ish one that might be ready to take the next step. But if the choice is to get another 30-something goalie with a questionable/mediocre track record or run with an unknown, I would prefer the unknown at this point.

How does Vegas get MAF? Obviously if Fleury lets Pittsburgh expose him in expansion, sure... but how else?
Can Vegas trade assets at this point to get players? I thought that was only possibly AFTER the expansion draft. If not, then there is no way that a trade can get it done...
If they can somehow do a trade, doesn't Fleury have to hand in a new 'no trade' list to account for Vegas not being a part of the previous one??
And just cause I'm throwing out questions, isn't there a defined time where that list gets submitted (start of every year), or can the list be updated at any point and time based off the player's wishes??
Sorry for the rambling...
