It's interesting to me how many (strong) differing opinions there are with the different goalies available or potentially available. (Bishop great! Bishop not great!)

There are still many guys who are available who could be great, but we are we dealing with goalies. Even the NHL's best (Price and Holtby) have had playoff struggles.

If I'm the Flames, whatever I do, I wouldn't panic. I just hope whoever the Flames acquire or re-sign, has the confidence of the team behind him.

Not that its a deal the Flames should take, but I can imagine that the Avs will move a goalie before the expansion draft.

My guess is Pickard is who they will keep.

Semyon Varlamov will be probably be the one on the move but his contract will make it tough on Sakic. Its tough to say but he will probably be the man in LV if no one wants to trade for him.

Sakic has already said he's protecting Varlamov and exposing Pickard.

Also, they can't move one of these goalies before the expansion draft without bringing in another who meets expansion exposure requirements.

If they traded Pickard away for instance, and didn't bring in another goalie they would have to then expose Varlamov or face penalties.

No kidding eh, seems foolish to me.

I don't think it would be to hard to pick up a goalie who would meet requirements if they decide to get value out of Pickard.

Yeah probably not. getbak made a list somewhere in one of these threads of teams with multiple depth goalies who meet the requirements.

If this is the case, what if the Flames pursued Pickard as a back-up?

At 25 he should be close to coming into his own. Also, his 1 x 1 contract wouldn't leave scars. Also, the price of acquisition wouldn't be absurd.

Still, he hasn't played much hockey, only logging 86 games. Moreover, last year's season might have shattered his confidence.

does anyone have strong feelings?

I was hoping they'd trade for him and have him back up Bishop

I'd still be interested though. Guy had a rough year with an increased work load, but the team in front of him was historically bad.

I think if the Flames add a veteran starter like Fleury we will see a younger backup like Rittich, or Gillies.

If the Flames get a young goalie like Mrazek then I see Johnson being re-signed as the backup

I'd be ok with him as a backup, not as a starter. Problem is, you'd have to give up assets to acquire him, whereas you can probably find a comparable player as a free agent this summer. I'd rather re-sign Johnson than trade assets to get Pickard.

IF we find a really strong starting goalie (and I'm losing confidence in that day by day), then I would want to either bring back Johnson as the backup, or let Rittich get a chance as the backup.

I think there could be a deal to be made with a rebuilding Jersey club as Corey Schneider is under contract for several more years.

It's been brought up before that the 6 million cap hit takes him through 21/22 and he's 31 now.

Stellar career stats though. Here's a look at his resume and cap situation:

Schneider is ideal and should be available but it really depends what direction NJ wants to go. Are they a team that is entering a rebuild or are they going to be aggressive with their cap space and try and compete sooner than later.

They have Taylor Hall entering his prime. They have Zacha and soon to be Patrick to add up front. They have the cap space to take a big run at Shattenkirk who wants to play in the NY area. Zajac, Cammy, Henrique are decent vets up front. They could try and re-tool on the fly and if that is the case they keep Schneider

If Schneider is available he goes straight to the top of my wishlist.

Grubauer is my current pick for the 'younger guy possibly ready to become a starter'.

Make me happy Treliving, it's what you're paid for!

Obviously Schneider would be great - but what could we conceivably offer them? I don't see any deal Calgary could put together that they would agree.

Now cue the posts where someone thinks like Jankowski and a third can get it done

The trade value of goalies always seems surprisingly low to me. We do have some decent goalie prospects and some okay defensive prospects, and picks of course. Could get it done.

Always tough to guess because you don't know how much (if any) they want to move him.

He was traded 4 years ago when he was 27 at the start of his prime for 9th overall straight up.

So logic would dictate that 4 years later and now 31 years old his value should have dropped some, so 16th overall seems like it should be in the ball park value wise.

However, 2013 draft >> 2017 draft

So the Flames offer 16th overall plus a decent prospect with NHL upside. If they are OK with moving him that should be plenty. Can't really pick a prospect because it would depend on their scouts and who they like, and whether or not they want a D or F. I doubt they want a G because they have 2-3 really good ones already.

Is there any reason to think the Devils will move Schneider? They don't seem to have any other goalies in their system knocking on the door right now. Even if they go into a full rebuild, the best thing for a young team is a solid goalie they trust.

He's still relatively young for a goalie and they have him locked up long-term for a reasonable price.

Yeah, I don't find it likely either.

I mean, I kind of think his value is higher now than it was 4 years ago? The guys a proven stud now, albeit one that's coming off his worst season.

I just don't see how they would go for 16 plus Jankowski/Andersson or whomever.

Lehner is probably my favourite goaltender. He's solid, driven, outspoken and sounds like a leader in the room. I know he's clashed with some teammates and coaches before, so that is a bit of a red flag, but considering the absolute disaster Buffalo was for a few years, it's not surprising. They also have Nilsson who is solid, so I don't think you'd have to pay a premium to get him.

Good numbers on a bad team. If Lehner is somehow available (which I doubt but I definitely see the possibility) I'd love to acquire him.

I think you'd probably look at pieces that are closer than the 16th OA though. Gillies+ is probably a starting point, or a similarly close prospect on D.
