Default NHL concussion protocol

According to the NHL you cant get a concussion from your head hitting the boards.

https://www.thestar.com/sports/hocke...ng-boards.html

Quote:
A week after he was knocked out of playoff game with a concussion, Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby slid headfirst into the boards during another tense game against the Washington Capitals.

He did not come out of Game 6 on Monday night.

Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press in an email Tuesday that the league’s centralized concussion spotter decided the play did not meet concussion protocol criteria that require mandatory removal from play. The protocol states a player must be removed if a spotter sees symptoms in a player who takes a blow to his head or upper torso from another player’s shoulder, his head hitting the ice or from a punch to the head.

Crosby slid into the boards exactly one week after he was knocked out of Game 3 by a blow to the head from the Capitals’ Matt Niskanen. He missed Game 4 with a concussion and returned for Game 5 on Saturday.

Since when has any kind of consistency applied to anything the NHL does?

To be fair, we don't know if Crosby has a concussion. It's in the NHL's best interest to protect Crosby's long-term health, on account of him being the best player in the world. The incident with Ovechkin and Niskanen looked pretty bad but he might just have a neck injury or something.

That's not the point here. Earlier this season, McCrozky stumbled and smacked his chin off the ice. The centralized spotter immediately removed him from the game.

Crosby getting slammed into the boards head first should have warranted the same reaction. The spotter was probably grabbing a coffee at the time and missed it, and is now making up dumb excuses to save face.

That or Penguins management saw the spotter rise to his feet and firmly placed a gun between his shoulder blades and told him to sit the hell back down.

Can you imagine being a spotter in the playoffs tasked with demanding Sidney Crosby be pulled?

I honestly can't believe they came out and said essentially "the boards can't cause concussions"

Mind boggling.

The NHL is so ridiculous. This past season has really had a lot of examples of how bush league the NHL can act.

laying the groundwork to bankrupt the league in 20 years as a result of personal injury lawsuits.

It's going to be depressing in 15 years hearing about how Crosby can't remember how to hang up the phone or button his shirt.

They will be singing a different tune, when the class action lawsuit is settled, and the NHL will spend billions to former players with CTE. It's already happened in the NFL. Only a matter of time before the NHL has to answer for not changing the dynamics of the game, for the benefit of player safety.
