I wonder if this why it took so long to get a deal done. Sounds like this is a concession that would have pained King and Edwards.

I think it would be incredibly foolish to throw tens of millions of dollars at a goalie that has never played a game with the team.

Too many times do we see goalies with goods stats fall off a cliff when going to new teams.

I also haven't seen anything to suggest that Treliving is doing a better job running this team than any of the previous GMs.

It wasn't deadline day. The Bishop trade happened on a Sunday evening, less than an hour after the Flames played in Carolina.

If there's any truth to the rumour that a trade fell apart because King needed to okay it and he was unavailable because he was on a flight, you have to question why Yzerman wasn't willing to wait a couple of hours if the Flames were offering him a better return than the Kings?

Maybe the Kings were going to pull their offer off the table if not signed by their deadline. Not sure why they would do that but Lombardi is kind of an ass so maybe he was trying to keep Bishop from he Flames.

If true, probably because he got dicked around by the Flames/ownership/Ken King last summer.

Kinda amazing Treliving even wanted to come back.

Though it sounds like his new contract comes with a guarantee of no Ken King meddling:

Ken King is a ######...not because he nixed the Bishop deal, but because he's useless in this organization.

The Flames can do so much better than Ken King.

I'm not sure where Reggie is at career wise, but I vote for Ken King working for Reggie in some capacity. Coming full circle from Reggie working for Ken King early in his career.

Jay Frickin' Feaster.

The man who almost gave Brad Richard $10 million a year for god knows how many years.

The man who signed Ryan O'Reilly to an offer sheet that would have cost the Flames draft picks AND lost the player as well.

The man who got horrible returns for Regehr, Iginla, and Bouwmeester.
Except that Feaster was largely a 'yes' man for ownership. I can only speculate on the Brad Richards signing attempt, however, in the case of the O'Reilly offer-sheet, Feaster was doing what he was told.

The returns were underwhelming for Iginla & Bouwmeester, but their NTCs played a part in that. Regehr was traded by Sutter, IIRC.

^ No, Regehr was one of Feaster's first moves.

Feaster wasn't a horrible GM... he built a lot of the team we have today, and also acquired pivotal guys for the 2015 run like Hudler, Jones, and Russell.

Sometimes you need to think through rumors and specific scenarios as not everything can be taken as it is being said.

What constitutes owners "meddling" ?? There is a massive difference between these rumored situations

Vancouver: Team owner makes it very apparent that they want Torts as their new head coach for the team to get them over the hump with a tougher style of coaching.

Edmonton: Team owner and owners son LOVE Nail Yakupov and want him selected with the first overall pick going against all the scouting and management of the organization.

Calgary: May or may not have killed a deal with Bishop for what amounts to a huge financial commitment. Given today's foreign exchange rates, a rumored $35-37 million contract is actually close to $50+ million in Canadian funds, nothing to sneeze at here.

Also the rumors of not being able to get a hold of Ken King because he was on a flight seems strange. An organization of that level and the level that Murrary Edwards has built in his career would have had some sort of back up plan for communication during significant events. This shouldn't be a mom and pop coffee shop here and in my personal opinion of a man like Brian Burke should be able to contact a Murrary Edwards if need be.

I have no reason to doubt that Edwards has a very methodical way of analyzing his business and asking a lot of questions and understanding the rationale behind decisions that will affect them, I just don't think he is the type to sit there and tell management which 1st rounder to select based on his visualized "foot speed" I know he is one of the most influential owners in the NHL behind Jeremy Jacobs and is known to be very close with Bettman on the direction of the NHL.

Feaster traded Regehr to get out of white collar 'cap jail' in order to sign Brad Richards to get into a federal pound-me-in-the-ass 'cap jail'.

From what I understand it isn't the contracts that limit the GM, it's hockey matters as King thinks he's a hockey guy. The Flames have said they have no problem paying to the cap, so what does it matter how they divie it up. Even Iron Mike said he wasn't fired by Sutter, it was from higher up. So who was higher up?

I'm so glad Treliving and Burke won this power move.

FWIW I do recall a former GM, might have even been Burke, talk about the threshold of contracts/deals that every team ownership puts in place for their GM. Its not the GMs money, its the owners. Every management has some kind of threshold where under it, they can make the deal. Over it, either length of contract or dollar value and there are approvals required.
Was it a problem in this case, I dont know. But this is not unique to the Flames.
