I always did find those "Western Business Games" and "University Business Games" to be completely and utterly lame. I know a good portion of it is funded via sponsors and by the student themselves but it shouldn't be done under the sanction of the University or it's clubs.
Doing this under the pretext of "networking" is a joke, the only networking is the e-mail 3 months later after one half goes in for an STD test....
A couple years ago, a Westjet flight had to make a unscheduled landing because someone from the UofC contingent was a drunken mess on the plane.
I suspect this might be the last straw....
EDIT - 33 yr old alumnus? Dude, put your past behind you. Don't be that creepy guy at the bar around all the 19yr olds....

Whats up with the balconey jump? I only heard a snippet of the cbc news story, but apperently someone jumped across some sort of gap at a 7 storey height, and fell only 20 feet??? I don't know the layout of the place, but that sounds like trying to clear a 6-8' atrium, possibly to a floor below. That's a ridiculous gamble! cajones grande, mente menos.
Where do I sign up for 'Party U"?

I don't like hearing about this sort of thing, because it gives students an even worse name. It's like that with all parts of society- a few ruin the name of many.
That being said, if you were given a sponsorship to go to a ritz hotel and drink your face off then why wouldn't you? The only problem is that some people are not responsible, drunk or not.

The various universities involved are NOT pleased with what happened. They say it gives them a bad name. They also stated there will be an investigation and futher disiplinary action taken.
The Chateau Lake Louise said the group will never be allowed back.

just further background, the year after Lethbridge hosted WBG there was so much damage done to the university that the uni's said that they were no longer allowed to happen on Campus. This is why they have to have it in places like L.L. The universities know about these games but they do not really condone them (as you can see why)...networking my ass

At Law Games in Ottawa two years ago all the participants from across Canada were booked into one hotel and about $40,000 worth of damage resulted. I wasn't there but I have heard accounts of people walking around naked, burning couches being sent up in elevators, furniture thrown out of windows, and pizza delivery guys being tipped with cocaine.
Perhaps more ridiculous was the Australian University Games I participated in in September (our baseball team went unbeaten and won gold, thank you). There were between 5000 and 7000 university students from across Australia. Let your imagination run wild. Undoubtedly the craziest party I have ever attended. At the end of the week I don't think the city of Adelaide was sorry to see us go home.

I know a bunch of them that went... what a drunken night of debauchery and drugs. As a former business student, I've heard some good and bad stories from the WBG. I never went to any of them, mainly because I hate the clubs and club mentality (espeically in business at the U of C, it's very 'clique'-y). but the WBG were legendary for everything that the paper described...
Makes me wish that as a recently graduated alumni, I wasn't invited...

See, thats what I don't get. They're all over the news saying "This is not a school sponsored event, and we have nothing to do with it"
But at the same time, they're saying that there is disciplinary action to be taken.
If its on their own time, who cares what they do. If they get into trouble, its their fault not yours, especially if its not a school sponsored event.

Under university regulations, I believe, you can still be disciplined for non-academic misconduct. Even if it's not officially U of C sponsored, the fact that it's a group of U of C students going as a U of C group still reflects poorly on the University, so the U can take action they deem necessary.
On a side note, as a recent U of C Business Grad, I'm incredibly pleased that these types of stories are out there making a lasting impression on Business Students
