I think Brouwer was improving near the end of the season, as was Chiasson for that matter.

The Flames have lacked those big butts in the crease and it seemed a while for our some of the other players to find a way to utilize that more. Brouwer is pretty good at screening goalies and I think we will need to replace that element somehow if Vegas does claim him.

Haven't confirmed it yet, but I am pretty sure Shinkaruk is eligible for waivers next season.

edit: Yup

So unless Vegas thinks he will sneak through waivers, doesn't care they might lose him on waivers, or think he will be a full time NHLer for them, it makes it less likely they will select him.

I think Vegas ends up taking Brouwer. That's not a compliment of Brouwer's play but rather a realistic look at what's available from the Flames roster.

You could make the argument that Brouwer wasn't used the way he should have been and could see improvement in a new situation. You can also cite his "intangibles" which people were still talking up even after the team got swept.

The only sticking point will likely be his cap hit and term. Right off the hop, Vegas is likely more worried about hitting the cap floor than anything. However, if they are projecting their picks and who they may have to re-sign in a year or two plus the occasional UFA signing, a big cap hit on a guy with intangibles may not be very attractive.

After hearing Treliving talk this morning, I have a weird feeling Ferland is left exposed. He had nothing but praise for Brouwer and Lazar was just acquired for a 2nd... so who knows.

I think we lose Kulak, with an outside chance of Stajan, Brouwer, or Shinkaruk.

No one really attractive in that list so I think they'll agree to a deal with Engelland and call it a day...

Kulak or Versteeg would be their best choices, by far.

I don't think Hathaway is exempt from the expansion draft.

He might be a long shot to be taken, but I'd take him over plenty of the other names that are listed here.

He is exempt. His first year he was on an AHL deal, so he is just completing year 2 of his ELC.

How are they going to pick Versteeg? He doesn't have a contract

Shinkaruk looks like one of those players who are top-six or bust – but the Knights are going to have a terrible top six next season. Good enough depth, but they're not going to get a lot of scoring when most teams protect 7 forwards.

Shinkaruk hasn't proved much at the NHL level, but he's probably as good a stopgap as they'll get outside the UFA market, and he still has time to develop into an everyday NHLer. If I'm in McPhee's shoes, I'll have a long, serious look at claiming him.

Of course he praises Brouwer publically. He WANTS Vegas to chose him.

Sign him in the 48 hour window right before the expansion draft.

If they sign any UFA in that window, that will count as the player they take from whatever team that player was under contract with to that point.

It's the last option in the poll, and I list the Flames UFA's in the OP.

Went Stajan, 1 year left on contract with a $3.125M cap hit to help Vegas hit cap floor while only having to actually pay $2M (not sure if the $500k signing bonus comes in before or after the expansion draft)

Brouwer will be $4.5M for 3 years, feel like they wouldn't want that contract

It was to the level of praise that gave me pause. He sounded pretty genuinely on side Brouwer.

Plus I really don't think he's convincing McPhee to take Brouwer by doing a ten minute segment at 8AM on an AM radio show. Something tells me that's overstating the reach of the program a little bit.

He wouldn't be trying to convince McPhee of anything, that's for sure.

But it's a Calgary radio station, and Brouwer lives here. Never hurts to edify your players in public.

I badly hope they take Brouwer. The Flames will need to be as efficient as possible with cap space as they transition to bona fide contender, and overpaying a bottom six player by $2 million is crippling.

I think they take Kulak, though. Kulak showed he's ready to make the jump last season, and, while Vegas' defence will be pretty good (forwards will be awful), it's nice to have a kid who can make the jump at anytime available to you.

Outside shot at Stajan or Chiasson as middle forwards for the short term.
