Default Leafs Sign Zaitsev - 7 years for $31.5M

https://theathletic.com/57440/2017/0...lion-contract/

Limited no trade clause included. Seems risky for a player with one season under his belt...

Could be a bargain or a disaster. We will see.

I think that signing young top 4 defensemen to long, reasonable deals is almost always a worthwhile gamble. I think we are all happy that the Flames locked up Brodie before he proved anything.

GMs are getting the hang of NHL16 contract offers. Check the star rating, and lock em up long term for a discount. It's way crazier in real life.

I guess one recent regrettable one would be when the Kings signed Slava Voynov to a 6-year deal, not knowing he was a sociopath.

Seven years is a long time given one season of NHL experience. That team is going to get pretty expensive in a couple of years if their young guys can maintain this season's scoring pace.

Didn't this signing happen a month or so ago? I thought I remember another thread and hearing about it awhile back??

Babcock must see something in him to give the management the go ahead for a 7 year deal.

It was rumored but never made official.

Brodie had proven a hell of a lot more than Zaitsev has.

I think that's one of the reasons they make this deal.

They now have Rielly and Zaitsev signed long-term for 5 million and 4.5 million a season. Reasonable deals for top 4 pairing D. Could end up being great deals down the road, who knows.

Flames signed Brodie in 2014 so he had played two half seasons and one full season.

Zaitsev's first season here he looked very good. He was getting the toughest match-ups and put up similar numbers to Brodie's 2013 season (except for his plus/minus)

Plus he played 7 seasons in the KHL which should mean something. I don't think there is as huge of a gap between the KHL and the NHL as we like to think. Look at Radulov this season.

For the Leafs, they have to hope so. It could also turn into Jared Cowen 2.0.

Brodie was already playing top pairing with Giordano when he signed, and was excelling at it.

There is no comparison.

Looking at Radulov:

Last four seasons in KHL: 181 gp, 238 pts, 1.31 ppg
This season in NHL: 76 gp, 54 pts, 0.71 ppg

KHL career: 391 gp, 492 pts, 1.26 ppg
NHL career: 230 gp, 156 pts, 0.68 ppg

That's a pretty huge gap.

I stole this off of Toronto HFForums, but it is kind of interesting. It's an interview Zaitsev just did in Russia after signing the new contract. The interesting parts to me are when he talks about Babcock. Kind of shows how Babcock isn't just an X's and O's guy but really gets involved with the players lives.

NSFW!

Oilers took a similar risk with Klefbom giving him a 7 year deal after some injury plagued seasons. Looks like a steal today. On the flip side if Zaitsev isn't at least a solid number 4 for the life of the deal it hurts the leafs bigtime.
