Well yeah. My point is they had asset upon asset to get what they needed. Instead they let Stastny walk as a UFA and traded O'Reilly and McGinn for a futures package.

They needed to pull a Hall for Larsson type deal. A Johansen for Jones..

Anyways. F them. Im glad they screwed it up and got screwed tonight too. Im no Avs fan.

What's really amazing is that the top 3 teams had already been shown since they missed their draft order ... that meant that Van was guaranteed the 5th spot at that point. Seems that fanbase isn't very bright.

I remember reading that last year the oil were one number off from getting 1st overall again and Auston Matthews.

And a few of them cheered when they saw it? I can't understand that at all. A) you know you got bumped already... B) you don't want to hear your name called unless it's for #1...

Yeah, I was confused about that. I thought maybe it was sarcastic cheering, but maybe I was being to generous.

I thought so too until I saw how many were cheering.

I think more than likely this was a group of relatively casual fans who were not clear on how the draft lottery works.

Oh don't doubt it. It says a lot of Vancouverites that from picks 15-6 they couldn't figure out that your name being called was a bad thing.

Casual fans who were at an official draft lottery viewing party at Rogers Arena?

Devils never ended up forfeiting that pick. The penalty was rescinded.

If the lottery was fixed, we'd have seen the Arizona Coyotes win it a time or two.

Three seasons ago they won 52 games. 52 games!

Here is their top 8 scorers from that 52 win season...

C - Duchene (22)
W - Landeskog (20)
C - O'Reilly (22)
C - Mackinnon (18)
C - Stastny (27)
D - Johnson (25)
W - McGinn (25)
D - Barrie (22)

How do you screw that up into the mess we watched this season?!?!
Crappy D aside, that could have easily been the best centre depth in the league after maybe the Pens. Crazy to think that 4 years later they might only have Mackinnon left if the trade Duchene rumours ever come to fruition.

Course 101 on how to completely butcher a rebuild

I assure you the Vancouver Canucks organization will not lose any sleep over drafting #5 instead of #2.

In your average draft year it doesn't matter if you are #1 or #6. It's only certain years where obviously elite players that can single handedly change a franchise's fortune that make losing a lottery draft hurt.

The 2012 draft is the prime example. Every GM in the league right now would take the guy drafted #30, Tanner Pearson over the guy at #1, Nail Yakupov.

Heck for that matter at least 15 other GMs would trade the guy they selected from #2 to #29 for that same #30 pick.

The 2011 draft again very similar. How many GMs would take #7, Mark Scheifele over #1, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

The vast majority of drafts are no different. The odds are greater that a player drafted #2 to #30 is going to be the superstar that #1 is not.

Draft years 2015 and 2016 are obviously very different. Both years featuring top 2 players that were superstars before even being drafted.

It's no longer about getting lucky drafting the right kid at #6, #12 or even #19. Teams may have a salary cap but they do not have a cap on hiring the best coaches, trainers and scouts to give them the best odds of not only drafting the right player but also developing them into their full potential

If the Canucks were confident in their organization and the people they have working or them they wouldn't have an problem. They should already be thinking whoever they draft at #5 will be the best player in the draft in 10 years. Not from pure dumb luck but because our coaches and trainers will make the kid a superstar.

Case in point.

Sam Bennett.

Everyone in the league think he's a bust. That same Sam Bennett is going to put up 30+ goals and 70+ points in 2017-2018.

Same excellent examples you have shown but some Flames ones I like are.

Tkachuk at #5 vs the Oilers top 3 RANKED player in Puljarvi

Sean Monahan at #6 vs Nathan McKinnon @#1

Interesting # combination and outcome. A few (or several) years down the road and we shall observe the results of this.

When you hire people that rival Forest Gump for intelligence it's no surprise.

Sakic and Roy said the stupidest things before committing to draft Mackinnon instead of Jones.

Ya know.......

The forward group in this draft is incredibly skilled. It would be foolish for us to consider anything else.

Any layman or average fan can look back at that year and see within a few seconds the avalanche had two primary needs.

1. Defencemen. First pass Dman, Shooting/Point Dman, Defensive Dman.
2. Wingers. They had just one single Left Winger with Top 6 potential.

You look at this and you know instantly Its either Jones or Drouin.

Hindsight being what it is. They should have trade #1 for Calgary's THREE 1st round picks.

If that trade happens the 2013 draft goes down like this.

1. Calgary Flames - Sasha Barkov
2. Florida Panthers - Seth Jones
3. Tampa Bay Lightning - Nathan Mackinnon
4. Nashville Predators - Elias Lindholm
5. Carolina Hurricanes - Sean Monahan
6. Colorado Avalance - Jonathan Drouin

Calgary was VERY high on Barkov that year. They had a number of scouts and even past players that were all chirping at the scouts and feaster that Barkov should be the target.

Pretty certain Florida would take BPA with the #1 center gone. Back in 2013 Florida needed both high end Centers and Dmen.

Gets interesting at Tampa. It would be down to Mackinnon or Drouin. I get a feeling they'd take Mackinnon as he had the higher skillset at the time of the draft.

Nashville they needed a center badly. They only took jones knowing they could trade him for a #1 down the road and because they were certain the next 2 centers were on a completely different talent tier.

Carolina then takes the next best center. They lose out on Lindholm who is obviously the center they coveted. Instead they settle for a 30 goal center in Sean Monahan.

Karma for once is on the side of the Avs. They play their cards right and pick up 2 more 1st round picks. They draft Jonathan Drouin at #6 overall who contrary to belief is ACTUALLY exactly the player they needed.

Now this is where it gets sick.

When they drafted Mackinnon they had THREE centers that all had #1C potential with at worst #2C downside.

Statsny - Ryan O'reilly - Matt Duchene

Just for fun who would Colorado pick at #22 and #28....

based on the most basic eneds.

#22 Colorado Avalanche DRAFT D Shea Theodore.

#28 is more difficult to interpret. Could be Klimchuk as he'd be a good fit or could be another D man like Petan.

Either way they make that trade with Calgary and they very well are not in the situation they find themselves in. The two big mistakes.

Draft Mack and trading ROR for a Top4 quality Dman + table scraps.
