You would think that if the Flames gave permission for Buffalo to talk to Conroy, Treliving will be coming back. Or they don't want either to be GM.

I think you pretty much have to give assistants (either from executive or coaching ranks) permission to advance themselves. As a professional and personal courtesy. He's worked for three general managers and is still around. It's obviously not just because he's a "swell guy."
It does give Conroy some leverage in his next contract negotiation even if he doesn't get the Sabres gig. His stock is rising.

I think the point here is that if there were any concern or intent to supplant Treliving, then the Flames would likely be more reticent to allow Conroe to interview for outside positions on the understanding that he would be the Flames' next GM. In other words, this is a pretty good indicator that Treliving will continue to work in Calgary.

Agreed 100%. However, there will always be the conspiracy theorists that will also say that the Flames have someone else in mind and feel confident that they will him.

Well, it's good to have "bench depth" in the front office too. That Flames owners are considering dropping both is ridiculous.
The Detroit Red Wings were legendary for that in their salad days.

Wow. @FriedgeHNIC says he believes Russ Brandon is leading the search for the #Sabres next GM. That ought to make fans happy...

He's the President of Pegula Sports, why is that surprising?

President of the Bills and Sabres. Made some bad hires recently, so if he's hiring the GM then the Sabres are pretty much doomed for continued mediocrity.

Bills just fired their GM and scouts the day after the NFL draft. They are a mess.

To add more context... the information about R. Brandon is towards the end of the article

Second, the man who wooed Whaley from the Steelers to have him tutor as GM-in-training under Nix; who revered Nix, recruited Nix and recommended that Ralph Wilson hire Nix in 2010 as GM; who gave Whaley a new contract in February 2013; who had both the final say in hiring Marrone as head coach in 2013 and in approving the contract clause that allowed Marrone to bail after two years, with $4 million in pocket; who, with Whaley in January 2015, inexplicably told the Pegulas, Dont let (Ryan) leave the room! in urging that Ryan be hired as Marrones replacement, even though it would necessarily mean blowing up the one thing on the team this century that had worked gloriously, namely Jim Schwartzs terrifying, attack, wide-nine, anti-Rex defence of 2014; who posed for the camera with Pegula some 15 months ago when Whaley was handed yet another contract extension; and who remains president and managing partner of not only the Bills, but the Sabres too.
Namely, Russ Brandon.

Found this on TSN. Even though they got permission, it doesn't look like Conroy was interviewed (yet?). If it is true Botterill will be named then maybe he doesn't get that interview.

One person said the Sabres have interviewed two Pittsburgh Penguins executives, associate general manager Jason Botterill and assistant GM Bill Guerin. They have also interviewed four other assistant general managers: Columbus Blue Jackets Bill Zito, Nashville Predators Paul Fenton, New Jersey Devils Tom Fitzgerald and Los Angeles Kings Michael Futa. Toronto Maple Leafs assistant GM Kyle Dubas has not been interviewed, despite his name surfacing in media reports as a potential candidate, that person said.

What I don't get is all the media reports where the NHL advised the Sabres that they should look to an experienced GM this time around and then essentially every single person they interviewed has 0 years experience as an NHL GM.
Maybe they're leaning towards a GM who can do both Sabres and Bills.

I get Botterill, he has been an assistant GM since 2009 and even the interim GM for a little bit until Rutherford was hired in 2014. Pretty sure he is highly thought of in the executive circles. Probably the same could be said for Futa.

If Craig Conroy gets the position (a big IF), does he take anyone else in the organization with him? Seems to be a fairly common practice. New GMs often want a few of "their guys."
Some organizational positions are also up for renewal.
