I think its actually better to wait until we see the results of this thing. A report by the Prime Minister where he basically says "I totally reminded him of the facts and we're going to sit down" to me is like hearsay in court.
For all we know he blubbered and begged Trump not to hurt him.
Its way too early in what is a possible trade crisis to say Mission accomplished.

Oh totally. It was just a flippant response to some pretty asinine anti-Trudeau/partisan rhetoric from a few posters.

Oh. my. god. People are actually taking Trump and his tweets more seriously than Trudeau because why?
Because he is the President of the most powerful country in the world, and Trudeau is the Prime Minister of a mostly frozen, middle power country whose existence depends upon the good-will of the most powerful country in the world.

If it was any other President than Trump sure, but he's pretty much proven already that he's an incompetent buffoon. It's just as likely that he was just pandering to his base.
Someone asks you a question YOU provide the answer. Don't dodge it with some flippant response and a broad reading list that may or may not answer the question. That is the point.

It isn't exactly a broad reading list. It is a pretty common fact that anti-Americanism sours Canadian politics to the extent that it is often used as a ploy by governments to solidify power.
Why are we surprised when the Americans respond with more of the same? We have no right to take the high road here.

Are you advocating a policy of almost blanket acquiescence then?
The last thing Canada needs to do is get all excited about Trump "attacking us". This round of the software lumber dispute started in 2016 when the most recent agreement ended, but it's being going on for decades;
Trump's 100 day report card is going to be terrible. He needs to add some actions in his "started" column. So, he's pounding his chest and making noise. NAFTA won't change in his term, because it's really "very complicated". Lumber will play out as it usually does (because, they need our lumber whether they like it or not). Milk, I can't form an opinion on yet.

Maybe I misread but it sounded like you were being critical of Chretien's approach to Iraq. Seems like it was a pretty good call in retrospect.
It was done in a pretty disrespectful and cynical fashion. Nevermind that the Americans knew that Chretien had played it for votes at home since the Canadian Forces were nowhere near capable of joining the coalition.

Meh. I'm pretty okay with it considering the war itself was about as disrespectful and cynical (not to mention probably illegal) as it gets.

WTF? The Trudeau years are substantial reading, filled with nuanced positions.

So when a Prime Minister does something right it is disrespectful and cynical, playing for votes at home, but when a Prime Minister complies it is rolling over and being feckless and overly compliant? What is it like living in a black and white world?
80 percent of Trump voters think it’s a bigger problem that news organizations produce false stories, while only 3 percent of them think it’s a bigger problem that the Trump administration makes false claims. (Among Republicans overall, this is 69-14.)
Only 17 percent of Trump voters think the Trump administration regularly makes false claims, while 76 percent of Trump voters think it doesn’t. (Among Republicans overall, this is 31-65.)
By contrast, 78 percent of Trump voters think that news organizations regularly produce false stories, while only 19 percent of them think otherwise. (Among Republicans overall, this is 70-27.)
Meanwhile, 84 percent of Trump voters think he’s keeping most of his major campaign promises, while only 4 percent think he isn’t, and 89 percent of them think he’s honest and trustworthy.
its no wonder he keeps doing the things he does with that kind of monolithic support....
i know there was some discussion about whether or not belittling Trump supporters does anything but make the situation worse...
at this point, i'd call a spade a spade... or stupid is as stupid does... the GOP base 'does stupid' damn well.
