Sure why not. Tanev can also play goalie.
Thanks AC for the gif.

Galchenyuk is a very good hockey player. He just needs a coach to believe in him, let him play his position (and make mistakes, learn from them etc.).

Galchenyuk and beaulieu will be dealt for duchene in the offseason. Colorado adds

Fair enough, but we don't need a Dman that brings things offensively. Hamilton, Gio and Brodie bring plenty of offense. What we could use is:
1. Prime age - 27, check
2. Good skater - check
3. Decent size - 6'2 200lbs, check
4. Puck mover - check
5. Good defensively - check
6. Strong possession - 50.9% CF 51.8% FF despite a 54.9% DZs, check
7. Right shot - check
8. Capable top 4 minute eater - check
Plus in my scenario with Stone re-signed also, it pushes him down into a role where he isn't asked to do too much. Strengthens the 2nd and 3rd pairs simultaneously.
As for his injury history, he's still a very effective D when he is playing, and if he misses games here and there all that does is afford the Flames the ability to get Andersson some NHL games to go along with playing massive minutes in Stockton.

He'd be a better option to pair with Brodie than Stone IMO.
6'2 200lbs so he's not small
Great mobility and can move the puck well
Really good possession driver too over his career, especially for a more defensive minded Dman who gets hammered with DZs %
Bouma (Cap dump, lives in VAN in the off season, Weisbrod connection)
Rights to Wotherspoon (Change of scenery, Weisbrod connection/2011 Flames draft connection)
2017 16-17th overall
for
Tanev
I'd still use Stone's obvious desire to be here to leverage him into a discount and offer him a 3 x 3 with a limited NTC
Giordano (34) - Hamiton (24)
TJ Brodie (27) - C Tanev (27)
B. Kulak (23) - M. Stone (27)
Bartkowski (28)
That's a pretty awesome well rounded D core IMO. Great average age too.
Kulak graduates and Andersson logs big minutes in Stockton and is 1st call up when a RHD goes down to injury.
|
The Flames can only protect three defensemen.
Edit: expansion draft is first...sorry

With what we're likely going to have to pay Stone, you won't want him on the 3rd pairing.

So if you make this trade, you won't protect Gio.
Losing him would hurt now (a lot), but be long-term good.

Then I don't want him. I see Stone as an Engellend replacement as our right shot 3rd pairing guy. 3 years $9M is what I am thinking.
Is Alzner a possibility here? I don't see him staying in Washington with all their contract issues

Lol no. The Flames could easily trade Gio for assets rather than letting Vegas have him for free. I know people are scared of Gio's age but the guy is by far our best Dman. Look at the mediocre season Brodie had when they were separated and how great of a season Dougie had.
All the good things the scouts and advanced stats people had to say about Brodano they had to say about Gio-Hamilton this year. Gio is the constant there

My trade scenario for Tanev would happen in between the expansion draft and entry draft.
So we protect Gio, Hamilton, Brodie, then make the trade.
Just an idea. I like Stone, but if we can find a better #4 RHD option and then keep Stone at a fair price for the 3rd pair RHD our D would be pretty awesome top to bottom IMO.

Here is a trade scenario for you.
Would you take the Eriksson contract on in a Tanev trade if the Flames could package Brouwer with the pick?
I can't see the Canucks moving Tanev simply for a mid 1st (I would do that deal). I could see them wanting out of that Loui deal however and he might be a fit on the top line RW spot?
Ugly cap hit for 5 more years though. Maybe Van eats $500k per?

If Brouwer doesn't go in the expansion draft AND the Canucks eat a little of the cap hit I would consider it. At least Eriksson drives possession a little bit, and he's only one season removed from 60+ points. Canucks were an offensive tire fire this season, he'd probably produce more on the Flames.

isn't he earning $4M/year already?? There is no way he takes a pay cut going into free agency.

Agree with stone as the strong third pairing guy that can step in with minutes if need be. Dreaming of a Brodie Andersson second pairing.

I think people are putting too much weight on his current contract. It was a one year deal at arbitration's door after he put up 36 points which is 70% more points than he put up in his 2nd best NHL season out of 6 total.
Here's his contracts to date:
1. $2,625,000 3 year ELC
2. $3,450,000 3 year
3. $4,000,000 1 year
If the Flames offer him $9-10 million over 3 years I think he takes that and runs. Especially with how his wife is from here, and in-laws combined with the Flames being and up and coming team.

I'd trade the 7th or 8th overall pick in this draft for Tanev if I had it (after expansion, ofc), the guy is a stud.

Exactly. He may be even more inclined to take term over avv. Something in the 3x5 area.

Haha! Nope! Wouldn't make the trade at all.
At first, I was thinking the expansion draft was after the amateur draft for some reason. If that had been the case, and trade for Taney were made, then issues of whom to protect on defense would have been complicated. (Gio., Dougie, Brodie, or Taney). I'd still rather have the first three. (I may be biased...Tanev is hurt too often.)
Obviously my edit wasn't clear.

Why are people so eager to trade our first? For a one dimensional dman like Tanev? He's so bad on offence he makes Robyn Regehr look like Paul Coffey.
Our first needs to stay put and we aim for a top six F or top 4 D. We can't short cut where we are as a hockey club and have to take the time needed to build the foundation properly.

Wouldn't yo unsay the Flames biggest need on the back end is a solid stay at home number 4? The Flames have 3 Dmen that can score 40+pts. A guy that keeps the puck out of the net should be a priority. Tanev is pretty good in that role
