lol, London's infranstructure (and transit system!) is to impress visitors.

Right.

Neither Calgary or London should be making major infrastructure decisions or be classified based solely on something that accounts for 5% of their economy. Whether that's in the billions or the tens of billions.

I'm not saying that's the sole reason, but 5% is 5%. It also makes cities more attractive to move to for work. By the way, I don't like the original CalgaryNext plan. I just think the tourism argument carries weight, as a portion of the decision.

A hockey rink and a football stadium aren't "sites" though.

People won't stay in Calgary a few extra nights to go have a look at a generic hockey rink or small football stadium.

The arena, the bridge, etc, ideally all make up something greater than the sum of their parts.

Even if Arenas and stadiums propelled cities to a class above all other cities in the entire world, which they don't. CalgaryNext is not such a facility. It was a poorly conceived idea that built in logistic and usability issues. If anything that monstrosity would have taken away from the cities ranking.

Looking like they are proposing to put it exactly where many of us have speculated it should go:

Here's a quote from Flamesnation:

Quote:
How would it work? Well, the parking lots are owned by the Stampede Board. The new building would be built, the Saddledome would then be demolished, and the Stampede Board would trade the land for the new building to the Flames for the land where the Saddledome was. The location of the proposed building would put it right nearby the new Green Line LRT – which would probably help with the lost parking spots – and because of its proximity to the East Village and placement in the Rivers Community Revitalization Levy area, the new building could receive CRL funding for things like utilities and infrastructure tie-ins.

This makes too much sense. Why the hell did it take this long?

Give the saddledome to the flames and call it a day... you would think that would make the flames happy

Because they wanted to shoot for the moon. They wanted the arena and the football stadium and the fieldhouse and presumably some cake.

It would make them less happy, they don't want to own the arena.

If we're going to bandy about with an obsession about being world class: irrelevant of personal taste, world class cities attract the interest to build projects by guys like Calatrava, or SOM, or Norman Foster. The notion that the status of an NHL arena somehow affects the architectural pedigree that's come to this city over the last decade is absurd.

I believe this is where the failed "Stampede Trail" redevelopment was going to be.

4,969 posts later and Bunk wins. Just as he always was going to.

This just makes so much sense I'm baffled that it took this long to get here and wasn't immediately obvious to everyone.

I was hoping they'd keep the dome around as event space or something if possible. Seems a shame to remove it since it's one of the most recognizable parts of our skyline.

i would bet the dome stays and corral is knocked down. Also would not be surprised if youth campus or bmo centre goes to give way to convention centre or field house in future
