Sorry smiggy, but Gaudfather and every other person who was screaming at Johnny to shoot was 100% correct. I would even go so far as to say he had an even better angle and easier shot last night than he did two years ago. He just has no confidence to shoot or something.
I mean look at the difference - Johnny ties it in 2015 from right next to the dot with Anderson on the edge of the crease. Last night Gibson was swimming in the blue paint and Johnny was another two steps in. He needs to shoot instead of being a Tanguay.
I'm still completely baffled and mystified as to why he didn't shoot the puck, given the time in the game (15 seconds left), the score and how deep Gibson is in his crease. It has been a problem all year with Gaudreau, over passing, trying to make the cute/difficult play. He did it in game 1 on a 2 on 1 with Ferland with the pass being picked off easily and then again yesterday in the most crucial part of the game. I've never been so upset at a player for not shooting in my life.
That makes more sense. Although it should have been about a 3 second conversation,
"we want to review that last play"
"no need to, it's goalie interference"
click.
Exactly. That would have made sense.I really don't believe they made the goaltender int call on the spot. There is zero evidence to suggest they did.

thanks for the pic and comparison to 2 years ago... definitely seemed to be very close to the same spot...
i think the issue, for me, with the behind the back pass, a) it wasn't particularly fast, so there was plenty of time for Gibson to see it happening... and b) Johnny started making that move while gibson was still nailed to the post - he wasn't crossing in front the net to force gibson to slide across... so there was no place to shoot. Toronto's OT goal happened because Hotby vacated the post to follow that puck, so that back pass there had a wide open net.
Johnny should have shot it low to the left and hoped for gibson to give up a rebound to where frolik was...
Gibson has been giving up rebounds quite bit; calgary needs to have a better net presence to try to capitalize
In that situation, you always shoot, that is the prime scoring chance right there, you can't get a better opportunity. Plus it is so close to the net that chances are, even if Gibson saves it, there's going to be a rebound.
To not even get a shot off is ridiculous and shows that Johnny is struggling. He's over thinking.

Calgary Flames, PLEASE GO TO THE NET! AND SHOOT THE PUCK! GENERATING OFFENSE IS NOT DIFFICULT! SKATE HARD, SHOOT HARD, CRASH THE NET HARD!

Brodie's penalty was just flat out unacceptable. Not much else to say.
But everything else was just so tight. A bounce here or a bounce there this series is completely different.
The only infuriating thing for me was the Hamilton penalty. GG was on point. How do you only call one penalty in that scenario? Hamilton was rushing to get back into the play after jumping up into the rush, and he was interfered with. By none other than Corey Perry, one of the biggest rats in the game. If that was Tkatchuk, who would have received the penalty? You talk about bias' and benefit of the doubt, how does Hamilton get the only penalty in that? Its asinine.
As tight as the checking was in that game, it was a really good game up until that point. The refs had put away their whistles and both teams were getting their chances. Then the refs took over. If he high sticks a guy, or a blatant trip, I can live with that. But that call was ridiculous given the circumstances.
In the ebb and flow of the series, I think timely PP goals are the difference. The Ducks scored on their late gift in game 2, the Flames couldn't get it done on their 5 on 3 in game 1.
I have no idea what the rules on goalie interference are anymore, so whatever. But I can see why the call back was goalie interference. I'm not too upset over that.

Look at Versteeg too, he wasn't prepared for that back-pass at all. He had to react very quickly just to put his blade on the ice to get a shot on goal at all (albeit a weak one). I think every player on the ice and every person in the building expected a shot.
Just bad decision by Gaudreau all around. Good setup on the tying goal earlier but junior level stuff here.

GG said in the presser that the ref told him that Toronto said it was no goal.. Eric Francis article says Toronto only reviewed if the puck had crossed the line before the net came off. It was a good goal, but the refs call on the ice was goaltender interference. GG would have used his challenge if the Ref didn't come up to the bench and say Toronto said it was no goal when they didn't. A cluster #### that cost us a lead.
You mix in some horrendous inconsistent officiating and we have a bunch of confused and angry fans.
That's pretty sneaky if you as me. Late calls on the Flames were frustrating especially Hamilton's when we had multiple Flames sticks being held and yanked out with no calls.
I think if it was challenged they could have said the puck was behind Gibson's blocker and Chiasson pushed his blocker into the puck. And Chiasson wasn't really pushed in. I think Bennett was fine, but I don't think they allow that goal for any team.

Except when it's Moose being shoved in. Then it's totally a goal.

Gulutzan completely on point when he suggested the standard changed.
That is exactly what happened. Sure those were penalties, by the book. But those weren't penalties that were called for the first 54 minutes of the game.

When this series started I didn't expect the Flames to win one of the first two game on the road. Other than some frustrating moments I am pleasantly surprised at how well they played in both games. I think people were getting ahead of themselves thinking the Flames would go in to Anehiem as world beaters, and as the fantasy didn't materialize are lashing out in frustration with the comments.
The Flames could win both at home if they just hold their emotions in check. Then we have a new series. If they don't, lets not pretend that we were expected to dominate the Ducks by any means. I hope they can pull the two out at home and then look to do a little more damage before the season is over.
