I would not be surprised, if the Flames wait until October and hope for a new mayor and council.

Garth Brooks is the biggest act this year. You also had Ac/dc last year and Metallica this year all skip Calgary. Ed Sheehan doesn't hold a candle to those guys

The Garth Brooks tour has stops in the 41 year old in the Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY and the 55 year old Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore as well as a number of shows in newer but smaller minor league arenas.

Garth Brooks, ACDC, and Metallica didn't curbstomp music streaming records with their latest albums. I don't even like his music that much but pretending Ed performing in Calgary wouldn't be a massive deal just because you prefer dad-rock is ignoring the reality of pop music.

2. If anything, bidding for the World Cup in 2026 is bad news for hosting the Olympics in Calgary. Hosting 10 World Cup games is likely the same or an even higher security cost than hosting a Winter Olympics, but it'll be a national event unlike the Olympics. Probably not enough money/political will to host both.

If Canada wins the portion of that bid the games will most likely be in Vancouver and Edmonton due to the size of the stadiums available. There's no way it's in Calgary imo. Don't think the world cup bid affects the Olympic bid at all

you think provincial and federal governments would give funds to two multi billion dollar events in one year? not likely.
I don't think a world cup bid from three countries so far apart will go anywhere, though. especially when one of the countries is has a trump administration. who knows what's going to be left of that country when they're done.

The World Cup is in the well known respecter of human rights that is Russia next, and then Qatar after that, who had to promise FIFA they would allow Israelis into the country since they don't recognize Israel as existing, nevermind the plethora of migrant worker deaths and slave like conditions in building the stadiums in Qatar (or the November/December format that interrupts every major league in the world). Trump is not going to stop FIFA giving the World Cup to North America, especially not when it would be the most financially successful World Cup is history by a significant margin. Money is all FIFA cares about.

The bid right now is unopposed, and with 48 teams it certainly makes sense to have it in three countries. I think Mexico will be a bit player in it but should still get some significant games.
I don't see how Trump is relevant at all, maybe we can keep that in the Trump thread on US politics.

LOL, FIFA is currently enabling Qatar to build an entire World Cup's infastructure from scratch on outright slave labour and people legitimately believe Trump is going to be some kind of ethical barrier to winning an unopposed WC bid? When Trump will be out of office years before 2026? Moronic.
The better question is why are we still allowing ourselves to grovel before scumbag corporations like FIFA and the IOC to host events in the first place? We ought to be telling both to pound sand. Why people are so eager for us to mimic 2014/2016 Brazil is beyond me.

I'm not talking about their music, or the past. Right now Sheeran holds down a massive amount of the Billboard and Spotify top spots. It's ridiculous the records he's somehow broken.

This. Not a fan of the music, but even 2 years ago when Ed stopped through Calgary, I was offered 3x the price for tickets I picked up for gf and friends. He wasn't even close to as big as he is now. Couldn't even get single tickets 2 mins after the sale. Meanwhile, I bought my GnR and Metallica Edmonton tickets months ago but you can still buy tickets today.
It's not even a fair fight comparing Ed Sheeran to anything else today.

Metallica and GnR are playing Commonwealth. Sheeran is playing Rogers Place. Even two shows at Rogers isn't going to have as many available seats as one show at Commonwealth.

good points.
but I still don't see all three levels of government financially providing billions for both a world cup bid and an Olympic bid held in the same calendar year. at best it would be one of the two.

Garth Brooks is going to shatter tour records. This isn't even a conversation.
As far as "Dad rock" goes, AC/DC just finished one of the most successful tours of all time. Ed Sheehan can not touch these numbers, not today and not tomorrow.

I'd hope not, the current govt seems happy to throw money around through. The WC is essentially inevitable at this point but hosting 10 smaller-draw group-stage games spread around the country while the US shoulders the vast majority of the tournament is more palatable than one city taking on an Olympics.

I believe that men's FIFA matches must be played on real turf, this means Calgary will not be hosting any games. Even the CalgaryNext proposal didn't include a real turf pitch.

IIRC BMO Field is the only real grass stadium in Canada and even that isn't large enough for a World Cup game. Even just 10 games is going to require at least a massive overhaul of 3/4 stadiums, all of which is going to be completely overkill for the CFL or MLS
