Sitter is the man. Happy he won 2 well deserved cups. Good luck to him wherever he ends up. Lombardi basically built those teams so he's not wearing the biggest goat horns. I'd take those two cups everyday. Sure LA is ridden with some bad contracts and questionable trades but like I said I'd take 2 cups in that short time frame and deal with the bad contracts

The Dustin Brown contract came in the summer of 2013.

Brown had one year left on his deal at the time and had put up 6 straight seasons averaging 25 goals and 55 points. He was their captain and had led them to a Cup win in 2012, and a conference finals in 2013. He also put up 20 points in 20 games when they won their first Cup in that 2012 run.

Since then he's put up seasons of 27, 27, 28, 36 points. I don't like Lombardi, but that's not on him. The player seems to have mailed it in since getting the big money, or just can't handle the pressure.

The Gaborik contract? That one was terrible because he was signing a 32 year old to a 7 year contract. Yikes.

Sutter has done well for himself 3 cups ....one in Calgary and 2 in LA not to shabby.

I don't feel bad for him. I bet if you asked Darryl he okay with it too.

I wonder if Darryl just doesn't step away from the game at least for this season.

He has done a lot the last 15 years or so and maybe could use a break to re-charge and spend some time at the farm with his family.

I agree. He had to be convinced to come back and coach the Kings. What would convince him this time when he's promised $5m to retire and relax?

That's fair, but is that the bar, the most successfully ran franchise in the league? Clearly that's the goal of course, but do they really believe there's someone available that can take them to that spot? Clearly I guess they do, but hard to critique what he's accomplished. Also, is argue Lombardi doesn't have the same caliber of core pieces in Kane and Toews that Bowman has to allow for the rest of roster flexibility and to remain a contender and allow to build around. Basically I'm saying he had less to work with.

I'm not saying it's wrong, but it is interesting how the what have you done for me lately thought always seems to prevail. He built a team that won two cups, to do so he had to make some sacrifices that impacted the future to win in the moment. Not saying he didn't make any mistakes even considering that fact, but I'm surprised more teams don't let GMs that win them championships also last beyond some of the long term sacrifices they made to win, and start the build again once those are done. Not sure that many teams wouldn't be better off if they did and accept that there are life cycles and costs to winning.

I could see Daryl going to a Lou Lamorello type role with a team.

"What has he done for them lately" is literally a phrase that could be used on every GM in the league in the last decade.

This is a mistake and the Kings will soon realize that. Wouldn't be shocked if they were Colorado bad next season.

Not with Quick, Doughty and Kopitar on that roster. Not to mention Carter, Toffoli, Pearson and Martinez.

Some of those guys had off years, but a team with those players isn't losing 60 games lol

Winnipeg has Byfuglien, Wheeler, Laine, Schiefele, Ehlers, Myers, Little, Connor, and Morrissey for him to work with. Big, skilled, need goaltending but they could play his system no problem.

He's a competitor - one of the best. That never goes away.

Most of these guys love the game and can't stand being away from it. Seems like good time for Sutter to put his feet up and enjoy some family time and Cali weather.

I agree with the comments that Sutter would be a good fit in Winnipeg. Really though, he'd be a good fit for a lot of teams. Sutter seems to be able to get the best out of players and put them in positions to succeed, that's what great coaches do. I think he's probably one of the best coaches in the NHL, but I also think he's the type of coach that the message can become stale.

I wouldn't be surprised however if the situation was more like somebody above Lombardi coming down and telling him to turf Darryl. Lombardi then refuses because Sutter's delivered us two cups... and I won't betray him like that. Then it becomes the ultimatum it's him or the both of you type thing and Lombardi says sounds good see ya later.

To put in guys like Robitaille and Blake though is pretty weird. Just because they are good hockey players doesn't mean that they'll make good managers. It also doesn't mean they won't, but it's awfully convenient. There's a ton of skillsets that I suspect these types of guys don't have that could come in handy...

Robataille has been in management with the Kings for 10 years.

Blake has been in management with the NHL and the Kings for 7 years.

They aren't exactly raw rookies to the job.
