Again, I agree, but thats a bit long. I'm thinking that you sign Elliot for 3 or 4, Gillies stays in the A next year, up the bigs in year 2 and takes over starter in year 3.
But thats a hazy plan at best.

What???
Gillies is 23, his time to make a push for the main roster is now. Playing time is obviously important for a goaltender but the "as much net time as possible" doesn't always wash. Juuse Saros has played less then 40 games each of the last two seasons between the NHL and AHL and he looks fine.
Tukka Rask shared the net early in his career getting limited time, Andrei Vasilevskiy the last two years, Frederik Andersen now with Toronto and Jon Gibson shared the net at various points. Plenty of examples. Getting 23-30 starts in the NHL is better then 50 in the AHL IMO.

Sign Bishop or Elliot to start
Gillies and Rittich battle for back up spot
The other guy goes and starts in Stockton
Shuffle them back and forth to get more starts if needed.
Vasilevsky in TB behind Bishop:
2014/15 - 25 AHL starts / 16 NHL starts
2015/16 - 12 AHL starts / 24 NHL starts
2016/17 - 0 AHL starts / 49 NHL starts
Don't need to sign another veteran goalie if the Flames sign a veteran starter.

We can't just leave Gillies in the AHL until he's 27.
Gillies and Rittich split time as the backup next season, imo. Getting NHL experience is crucial, and we will need a proper spot to develop Parsons and MacDonald, can't just leave them in the ECHL for 3-4 years.
Elliott and Gillies/Rittich is just about perfect. Better cost-wise than Bishop or Elliott and a veteran backup, and probably as good as you're going to get from the market talent-wise.

And remember...while we're talking about goalie combos next year, we haven't touched on the fact that the Flames have nobody to protect (assuming the stories are true and we are only looking at resigning Elliott in the offseason).
They still may make a deal to get another team's young goalie, and then we have someone else (like a Grubauer) to fit into the puzzle.
In that case, I can still see Gillies getting one more year while we figure out what we have in the NHL.

I think this is how it will end up, but how it should work out is this:
Sign Elliott. Say thank you to Chad Johnson. Huge respect for him, and the guy is a solid goaltender. I doubt he has trouble finding a job. Elliot has shown he's the number 1 we were hoping. Let Gillies/Rittich/Parsons/MacDonald battle for #2 spot. My guess is Gillies comes out on top and:
NHL: Elliott/Gillies
AHL: Rittich/Parsons (Maybe MacDonald, but doubtful)
ECHL: MacDonald/Whoever else.

Proven backups right there for the NHL squad.

i'd definitely prefer Elliott over Bishop.... i just think Bishop will be asking for a longer term at a higher price...
Elliott won't be a steal either, but i am sure he'd sign for less money and less years than Bishop.
And like others have said, Bishop has had a bit of a history with injury of late, whereas Elliott has not

We also still have Tom McCollum who has a bit of NHL experience and had good stats once he was loaned to Charlotte.
I'm also in favour of signing a #1 and letting the young ones fight it out for the second spot, rotating them to give them ice time.

I don't see enough opportunity in the market for 2 guys to go out and get deal for more than 3 years and 15 million. I'll happily take the guy who gets the shorter deal for fewer dollars.

Agreed. And they practice against NHL shots. Like with everything, games are different than practice, but I'd argue the difference is less for goalies than for players.

Few goalies stick in the NHL without a lot of AHL seasoning first. Most have at least 100 games in the AHL under their belt.
Corey Crawford: 255 AHL games
Martin Jones: 158
Devan Dubnyk: 142
Cory Schneider: 136
Braden Holtby: 132
Cam Talbot: 116
Matt Murray: 72
Jonathan Quick: 71 (AHL + ECHL)
Gillies: 47
It's premature to pencil in Gillies as an NHL backup next season.

Who will be looking for a starter? In the west, there's Calgary and Vancouver only (Dallas is stuck with their contracts) and in the east there's Philly and Winnipeg only.
Goalies that will be looking for work and teams would consider for the starting role are Miller, Bishop, Bernier, Elliot and maybe Darling.
Bishop, Elliot and Bernier will likely command the most, perhaps in that order.
