Bishop actually played better than Budaj for most of the season up until the trade deadline. Bishop just had a bad October.
Still, the chance to trade for a under-performing goalie who is putting up stats similar to your over-performing goalie? Without giving up much of anything? Seems like a no-brainer when you consider the odds of each trend continuing.

Called that pretty well. Was just a dumb move that addressed nothing.

I wonder what Bishop's price tag will be in a flooded goalie market.
Surely a goalie who will be turning 31 next November won't be getting a 7 x $7 million will he?
Wouldn't shock me if he's the Flames #1 target in the UFA negotiating window, but if his demands are still nutty they fall back to Elliot.
I think a 5 x $6 million would be OK with me.

If anything it was a lateral move at best.

Id hate to see the flames commit to him at 5 x 6. I think in order for this team to be chanpions we should be looking at a 3 year vet goalie singing at max. One of our prospect goalies needs to pan out and play a large roll at a good price. Still need to sign a top line right winger.

Oh, and I do not want Bishop.
He is on the wrong side of 30, big goalie with knee/injury issues and hes looking for a retirement contract.
I'd sign Elliott instead. Stay away from Bishop.

Looking at the way this season has gone (for both goaltenders) what leads you to believe the Flames have any remaining interest in Bishop?
Elliott has been better on average since part way through November. Similar ages, better play from Elliott, and likely a strong desire to not make another full-swap of the goaltending tandem all lead me to believe Elliott will be back.
Why are people still clinging to Bishop? I wouldn't take him at 7x7, I wouldn't take him at 5x6, and I wouldn't take him over Elliott.

Bishop has been overrated his whole career. I want no part of him on the Flames.

Bishop is younger than Elliot, and has been a legit starter in this league playing 60+ games 3 times and putting up elite numbers.
I think that it's possible Flames management would see if they could use a down year like this for him where he battled an injury and then was traded, to see if they can get an elite NHL starter at a bit of a bargain price as opposed to using this one down year as an excuse to completely dismiss his abilities and lose all interest.
I may be wrong, but it certainly is possible.
Also, the guys playoff numbers are ridiculous as well.
But hey, at this point I'm not going to complain if they re-sign Elliot either.

Yeah, if we could get Bishop on a shorter term deal I'd be all over that.
I think Elliott's contract demands are going to surprise some people - and given that re-signing him costs us a 3rd round pick in 2018, I don't find it too hard see a future where Elliott signs elsewhere.
Gillies' play down the stretch in Stockton, his strong game at the NHL level may - he's showing he is close to being ready to play at the NHL level. If that's the path (which it should be with Parsons undoubtedly turning pro), then I could see the Flames wanting a #1 goalie that has a proven track record of being able to carry the workload if needed.

LA wanted to add but couldn't afford to spend much asset wise. So they added Iginla and Bishop plus a 5th round pick for Budaj, Cernak, and a 7th. It wasn't enough, but they end up going in this draft with better picks.

I think that if the Flames go into the season with an Elliott-Gillies tandem that it could definitely work.
If Gillies proves that he isn't up to the task though, there are more than a few decent backups available for next to nothing. A guy like Jaro Halak passed through waivers this year. I wouldn't really be worried about the quality of your backup as long as you have a starter that you can trust.

Nope.
You let Gillies play in the AHL next year, its has to be Elliott and whomever else. The problem being that the backup doesnt tend to get enough games, they've got to play.
Unless they decide to split the workload, but even then, goalies tend to like more games.

Budaj has a better record with the Kings than Bishop or Quick. He is now 30-21 playing for non playoff teams
Budaj kept the Kings in the race...Bishop certainly did not have a better season

Fair point, but Gillies is going to be 24 next year. At some point practicing against players with NHL releases is better for a goalie than playing games against AHL-caliber guys.

I'd sign Elliott for a 2 or 3 year deal and have Gillies back him up. Hopefully Gillies takes over after year 2. Gillies strikes me as a competitor and I'd love to have him learn in the pros.
It's not about his one game either, it's because I think it's the best for his development. He can get 30 games in the NHL. If he sucks early, move on and a backup will be easy to find next season.

I agree, but if hes not going to get enough games then hes got to stay in the A.

That would be terrible for Gillies development. He should be in the AHL getting as many starts as he can for 3-4 years.
