Read Knolls book. It's old but pretty good.

Is there any study from an economist not involved with trying to get a stadium funded that states there is economic benefit?

thanks for sharing. This is interesting to me as I always thought NFL owners contributed money annually to a pool that then could get tapped into / shared when a new stadium is needed throughout the league.

Also poor Tampa, looks like that city got hosed.

Whoosh. You totally miss the point. The size of IKEA is not relevant. Neither is their successful business model.

It's future landfill material that they sell is reasonably replaceable. Maybe people can't get a $1 breakfast, but they can basically buy similar crap elsewhere, possibly for a few dollars more, but replacability is high.

You cannot replace NHL hockey nearly as easily.

Considering they paid below average the cities that split the payment with the team owners, I wouldn't say so.

I think the owners can borrow from a pool under certain conditions, but not sure what those are.

As an aside, Not being in LA worked like a charm for them. So many teams dangled LA in front of their local city/state to get what they wanted. Once everyone got the stadium they wanted, the NFL enters LA again.

Also I don't know what else MetLife is used for, but it proves the teams 'could' pay more. They just don't have to.

Disagree. The conclusion I draw therefore is that the stadium blows and they had to pay for all of it.

That's a lose no matter what way you look at it.

Keep the Dome. In 20 years it'll be a heritage item for Calgary. In 100 a national treasure.

Beautiful concrete girders.

Indeed they could, but why bother, I guess, when politicians are going to line up to give you other people's money?

As if Denver, Dallas, and Pittsburgh (for example -- since they are rather strong franchises) were ever going to leave town, even with that stupid "LA threat" looming out there.

People/politicians seem to go crazy when it comes to this kind of thing, especially in the States.

What sane or conscious person would think that all that money blown on stadiums in Detroit or Baltimore couldn't have been better spent? Cripes, the fire department in Detroit has a "let it burn" policy in certain areas because they don't have the budget to put out fires.

Maybe you can't, but I don't even sit in an arena, so even the Flames were playing for the town of Tuktoyaktuk, I would still follow them. If they changed their name to the Quacks, I'd still watch them online. If they folded, such as life. Some people are die hard Ford truck worshippers, some people just buy a good deal pickup.

Yeah those poor people that have 0% income tax. Must be tough to figure out what to do with an additional 30-40% money. Boo-hoo! (Jealous voice)

As long as you don't own property you're fine. Their property tax rates are quite high. That's how the state makes up the income.

I support a $200mm ticket tax + $200mm owner contribution for a total reno of the dome, including new strengthened roof, upper concourse with full box circle, removal of PL.

Please tell me this is a sarcastic way of saying you want them to build a new arena and that you don't actually think all that could happen?

Rogers Arena in Edmonton was 480. So.. just get a new arena.

It wouldn't be worth it to spend that much in renovations, the Saddledome is a big concrete structure, there is only so much you can do.

Well your suggestions for renovations are...

- New roof (even though the structural issues in the roof are because of the design of the entire building)

- Remove press level seating (this is again, part of the entire structure of the building)

- Add a ring of boxes at the top (If you do this and remove the press level, you're suggesting reducing the Dome capacity to 16k or less)

- upper concourse (you can't just add a concourse to a structure like the Dome)

The only way to accomplish what you want, regardless of money, is to knock down the press level and roof, then knock down everything else until it's rubble, then clear away the rubble, then start building a completely new arena in it's place.

You think Calgarynext has a lot of people laughing. If the Flames announced they were starting a $400mil+ renovation of the Dome by removing the roof we may just get laughed off the face of the earth.
