Any player who leaves without permission will certainly be suspended without pay for the duration. For a $5 million player, that's going to be over a half million dollars. And in the worst case scenario where they suffer a major injury, the team would certainly have the option to walk away from their contracts entirely.

Ovechkin still won't be going. The owner of the Caps is a smart guy, he played his cards perfectly so the backlash will land on Gary Bettman's lap from his players that want to go, not his own. I am 100% sure he doesn't want Ovi going either but he is not going to say that and alienate his Russian star player. Well played. I expect an announcement in the near future from the IIHF saying they are disappointed...blah, blah, blah...NHL players will not be eligible to compete at the Olympics due to legal issues and no agreement with the NHL.

I can't imagine how it will take for people outside of Canada to care about an NHL world cup.
The Olympics got people to watch cause they're the Olympics.

Well I'll be enjoying watching our amateur players take on the KHL/Euro league stars for those two weeks.

For someone like me who has no idea of the backdoor negotations and such, how exactly did all of this come to fruition? What was the NHL looking for? What was the IOC/IIHF's role? What's the ELI5 for this situation?

Oooh....I'd bet that Ovechkin will be going.
Theres something really weird about his fierce loyalty to Russian Hockey.
Like Putin has AO's dog in his basement or something.

Insurance costs, travel costs, NHL access to Olympic video rights, the ability of the NHL to associate itself directly to the Olympics, and possibly even some direct monetary compensation.
IOC said no to every single one and from the sounds of it basically refused to even negotiate.

He won't be participating, I would bet money on it. It will come down to legality. He has a legal binding contract with the Washington Capitals which contracts are under the authority of the NHL. The IIHF wants no part of that because they will take the backlash if they allow him to play. How many millions of dollars in lost revenue damages and other things do you think the NHL could sue the IIHF for? I am betting a lot. They are not going there. Unless Ovechkin walks away from his contract and retires to go to the KHL ala Kovalchuk he won't be participating in the Olympics.

I feel like some players would be stubborn enough. Maybe they'd feel that if they could get enough players on board (probably already well paid ones), that they could force the league's hand?
It wouldn't help the NHL either if they had to suspend an Ovi, Malkin, Karlsson, etc because they refused to be denied a chance to compete for their countries.

The owners dislike the Olympics because they feel they realize no benefit. The World Cup is a response to that complaint, not a cause of them abandoning the Olympics.

They shouldn't, and everyone understands the rational behind the decision. Obviously it's a business decision. It's still crap and I hope players go off to play in the Olympics.
The World Cup and abandoning the Olympics are 100% entwined.

I think this is too bad. Really wish they would have went. The Olympics should be a best on best tournament and everything else will pale in comparison, the NHLs made up World Cup will never be as good, it's too bad for the players who really want to go and may never get the chance again. I
I hope Ovi goes anyways, shame on the NHL

Why are people still talking like the players have the option to go anyhow? They don't. You think Bettman comes out now with this if he didn't know if the players could still play?

Wasn't Ovechkin butthurt that the NHL played in Salt Lake and Vancouver, then was thinking of not playing in Sochi. So his attitude was I'm playing for my country in Russia like it or not. Not sure if he will make a huge deal out of this one.

The Canada Cup / World Cup used to be the premier best-on-best tournament in hockey. Then the NHL went to the Olympics, and the Olympics became the premier best-on-best tournament. One of the reasons fans were lukewarm on the World Cup this time around was because they believed the Olympics was still the big tournament. Now they've been disabused of that belief.
If you like best-on-best international hockey, you'll be getting it again with the World Cup.

Agreed, and the world Cup will never be as good or have the same prestige.

Yeah, of course they are. That was pretty clear since day 1.
The NHL took all the risk and got no benefit. Now they're taking essentially no risk and getting all of the benefit.
No surprises there.
