I increased the deductible to $1000 instead of $500, made a big difference.
Also, perfect track record.

$1000 deductible?!? Yikes.
You guys had better shop around for some better insurance. You guys are getting majorly ripped-off.
Holy fark, my deductibles are $250 and $125.

Old enough
But that's a huge drop in your premium just because you went to $1000, which to me means that your insurance company is ripping you off big time. Normally the savings from changing deductible amounts are very small, even if you're young.

I think it went from about $260 with a $500 deductible, to $220 with $1000. Plus, I'm 21 and drive a Mustang. So that doesn't help either

Look around. When I was 22 and got my first car, I was amazed at the variance in premiums offered. I'm talking 100% differences in price.

I was surprised as well. I grew up in a small town and even though I don't live anywhere near it now I still get my insurance there. There are huge advantages to knowing your insurance agent personally and being able to talk to directly to her at any time.

Yes and no. I'm a broker meaning I represent a number of the largest insurers in NA while agents are usualy a direct writer with only one company. As a broker, my hands are quite tied when it comes to setting rates, not much flexibility but on the other hand, we have close relationships with our underwriters and at times can plead a case in a way an agent could not.
Brokers are a good thing overall though. Having choices is always a good thing.

'97 Golf (1.8L)
Bought it used about 5-6 years ago, long since paid off.
Insurance: Just under $80/mo.
Gas: $70-$90.
If I had to pay $500+/month for insurance (even $300+), I would definitely sell the car. That's effing ridiculous.

Ugh. I have to wait for my stupid stock to come back up so I can sell it and pay off the car. I should have amortized it over 5 years instead of 3. whoops.
