I think the Flames knew that period was going to be 'that kind' of period, much like games of the past...
hoping that both teams will now just settle down and play some hockey without the extra-curricular stuff...
Maybe the Kings can afford injuries, since they are pretty much done, but we cannot.

Agreed that the Flames need to get back to their game the rest of the way. Kings can't keep up if they go that way, so put them away. Glad the Flames stepped up in the first to not back down, but time to get back to Flames hockey...

If that's the reasoning then fair enough!
He could very well still be contemplating his future and doesn't want to indicated he's walking away already.
But not like a little tribute would be the worst thing just in case, even if he does return.
