Cherry has never shied away from saying something controversial or against party lines. He's also not employed by the NHL, so unless Rogers wants to come down on him I think he's safe.

I can see where he might defend it (routine whack on the hands gone wrong) and where he might condemn it (player safety has been a sticking point for him in the past re: soft cap padding, kevlar socks, extended glove cuffs).

Numerous times Cherry has stated that he can't say certain things or he'll "get in trouble". Although you're right, he usually makes his feelings known one way or the other.

There was a "hooking" penalty against the Avs last night that reminded me of that...McDavid

dude barely touched him

Producers and sponsors have been wagging the finger at Cherry ever since Coach's Corner started. Short of a prejudicial tirade or 'Joe Thornton', it's tough to get rid of one of the most influential Canadians as voted by your viewership.

I think if Melnyk gets fined he doesn't let this drop and the NHL provokes a fight the owner wont back away from. The optics look terrible in this scenario for the league in the court of public opinion.

My guess is that the NHL just ignores it and hopes it goes away.

Isn't that what happened with Karlsson.

Melnyk came out out all hot and heavy. Doing his best Trump impersonation saying he had evidence the cut was deliberate?

Whether he lets it go or not he should be fined.

Disgraceful for a team owner to publicly criticize the league and a player on another roster.

You're the owner of an NHL Franchise, not some idiot on HFBoards. If you have a grievance, take it to the league.

^Disgraceful seems a little strong. Melnyk is a doofus to be sure, but a bit of chaos is a lot better than 31 robotic owners always towing the company line.

I increasingly feel like hockey today is just a bad product. Even though the players have never been better. Not sure why the league is so afraid to do anything about it.

Crosby should get rag dolled next game against the sabres and sens. No way a player should be able to get away with that kind of behaviour. Super star or not, he needs to be held accountable.

A lot of the guys who do the color work between the benches talk often of all the stick work going on.

It is clearly a problem that the NHL has chosen to ignore.

I dunno. Seems logical to me.
- Lightly brush a player's glove in an upward swinging motion: 2 minutes for hooking.

- break an opponent's bones with a downward swinging motion: just part of the game.

I think they should change the name of the penalty. Name it what its called for. 2 mins for breaking opponents stick. 2 mins for stick breaking or maybe 2 mins for vandalism?

so let me get this straight....

a guy with hundreds of millions invested in a franchise, who sees a player have his finger nearly chopped off, and it's not ok that he's hot under the collar when there is no consequence?

And you believe he should recieve a greater consequence than the guy who did the slash?

And you further think he'll be ok with it, if that is how it plays out?

Flash, you don't think he will take this to the league? This bs has to embarrass the league. The refs should be publicly held accountable for not calling things. Perhaps fine them as players get fined for embellishing.
Something has to give. NHL is bush league when it comes to refs and discipline.
And I personally think any owner has the right to vent if he feels that someone has crossed the line. Kind of sad the captain gave Crosby a pass.

I have no issues with his rant, until he got into the personal attack on Crosby. Regardless of whether you agree or don't with the personal things said that's where he needs to be more professional as an owner.

Also very debatable whether his rant prior to the personal stuff on Crosby is tge smartest way to approach things, but I don't have an issue with it.

not sure why everyone is up in arms that Crosby didnt get suspended. Who ever gets suspended for that play (Staal, Sutter??)? it happens every game and the NHL always ignores it. if anything they are consistent on this one, consistently weak but consistent nonetheless

When Grapes says he'll 'get in trouble' he's usually stopping himself from saying something racist/xenophobic.
