Well, thanks for responding everyone. It's good to know that I'm not completely crazy. I'll give your suggestions a try and hopefully something works.
Sweet dreams! (hopefully!)

I think it's too late for Nyquil... considering I need to be at work in a few hours.
I'll HAVE to sleep tomorrow now... right? RIGHT!?!?!

i am having problems sleeping at the moment too. not stress related but more lonliness. my fiancee is working in liverpool for the time being so i do not get to see her during the week. after sleeping in the same bed with someone every day for 4 years its kind of weird being home alone. the only problem with going to sleep real late is that i find it really really hard to get up for work in th mornings! once i am up i am ok but getting out of bed on a cold miserable rainy london morning to sit in traffic for an hour is not a real motivator. anyway i found a great solution. have a few drinks and watch the worst tv ever, it helps if there really is nothing you want to watch on. then you will eventually fall asleep.trick is to clear you mind, if you worry about not sleeping or try to think how to get to sleep then you will stay awake. got to turn of the thinking. now i get to sleep by 2 every night which is pretty decent.

Yeah for Insomnia!!!!
I'm having problems sleeping aswell. well not sleeping I guess just getting on a normal schedule. here is is 415 and i know I'll have to pull a all nighter so I can make it to my class in the morning.
It seems like @ night I wont get much sleep because I cant fall asleep till really late, then the next day im so tired that i end up falling asleep on my couch or my mind cant concentrate on studying that I have to stay up late again just to get my studies done.
this damn insomnia has already caused me to drop 1 of my classes, and I'm scared but hoping that a second isnt on the way.

I sometimes have trouble sleeping. I find that having a couple beers (not getting drunk) gets me real tired real fast...

Too late now but a few suggestions for tonight:
- Milk. Many of us don't drink much milk as adults, and I find a big glass of chocolate milk before I go to bed really helps.
- Routine. Don't put on your PJ's (or whatever) at 7 PM because they are comfy, make that a part of going to bed.
- Matress. Not sure if you have already done this but you will find a $1000-$1200 bed will help you sleep way better than a $500 one. If you are buying new keep in mind there is a whack of margin in beds; so lots of haggle room.
- Self hypnosis. This can be done a couple of ways. The one I use involves counting backwards from 10.....waiting....waiting....."I'm now more relaxed than I was at 10".......waiting.......waiting..........9........ .waiting......waiting........."I'm now more relaxed than I was at 9" (and so on)
- Music at a low volume. Make up a mixed CD of "happy place" songs; about 250-30 minutes long. Play it at a volume that you can barely hear as you move around the room. The music will sooth you, and the low volume will unconsciously cause you to slow down your body and hopefully fall asleep. Also hopefully the low volume will not wake you back up once you have fallen asleep.
- Sleeping pills. Every so often I will take 1/2 of the lowest dose ones. Just enought to take the edge off so I can fall asleep.
Hope some of that helps.

The internet/TV are one of the worst things you can do to get yourself tired, reading a book, and even listening to the radio while in bed for about half an hour with no more than a reading light I found really helps me.
Oh, and stressing about not being able to fall asleep makes it even worse too!
Red, do you also wake up feeling really tired after sleeping too (say 8-10 hours, which is enough)? Sometimes with headaches?

Seriously, this is a very very common sign of a thyroid problem. This should not be hard to either confirm or negate at a routine medical exam.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned in the thread is exercise. I find that if I haven't had some form of exercise in a given day that I will generally have a harder time falling asleep. An after dinner walk or a 1/2 hour on the exercycle before dinner helps get some of that nervous energy out and can be a good release. Sometimes you just have to tire yourself out in order to get to sleep.
Oh, yeah... getting riden off into the sunset by your significant other is like flipping a "go to sleep" switch on a timer. Afterwards, you are generally calm enough that you can drift off if the room is nice and dark.

Nope... usually if I get a good night sleep, I feel great.
Yeah, I should really stop hyping myself up about not sleeping... that's probably part of it too.

Yep... I tend to sleep a lot better with someone else - I just moved here a month ago and my significant other is still in Alberta... could be part of it.
I excercise pretty regularily, but since I'm not sleeping, I don't have the energy to have a great work-out... but I almost fell asleep in the hot tub after my swim this morning... that was alright!

Glad you said it Reap....Im famous for waking up at 2 or 3am with design ideas for projects Im working on. If the idea is good enough I simply hop in the car or go up to my office and get it done...if it can wait and I cant get back to sleep, having a willing partner is always the best way.
