Melnyk: I won't let Karlsson go to the 2018 Olympics because he's Swedish
God, this is hilariously stupid.
Transcribed from this Callum Fraser tweet:
https://twitter.com/CallumFraser18/s...65730418266112
Melnyk: So, I'm going to give Sweden my best player at the risk of him being injured, beating our Canadian team. That doesn't make sense. Maybe if it was a Canadian going to play for Canada, maybe. But right now, I have no, it doesn't make any sense for our franchise (and) it's not fair to our fans if we were to lose him, God forbid, into a year like this to an injury in the Olympics.

Owners and players aren't on the same page at all these days.
We're headed for another lockout aren't we.....

Meh nothing new with the Sens organization, they have a history of refusing to let Karlsson and Zibanejad go to the WJC even though they were not playing in the NHL at the time and were in the AHL. Swedes were pretty upset about it back then too. No problem in letting Lazar go.

Melnyk could be the worst owner in the NHL. I can't stand that guy.

I get the not wanting your players to go because of a risk of injury with little benefit but not wanting your players to go because your best player is Swedish is ridiculous. Melnyk is s joke and I hope Karlsson refuses to re-sign in a few years.

So if Karlsson leaves to play what's Melnyk going to do? Fire him?
Lol.

If you replace sweden with kenya, his statement would be straight up racial discrimination.

It's a dumb statement but I think his point was moreso Karlsson playing for Sweden means the majority of senator fans won't be cheering for him, whereas Melnyk not would see the benefit if it was Turris for example and the fan base was cheering for him with team Canada
I don't think it's him being anti Sweden

Erik Karlsson has 2 years left, I really hope for his sake, Karlsson leaves Ottawa. Karlsson and Tavares are just wasting their careers away.

Hopefully Swedish prospects refuse to report to the Sens if drafted by them.

Why does Melnyk care about who is or is not cheering for Karlsson? He straight up said he is not going to "give Sweden [his] best player, and then qualified that declaration with a possibility that "if it was a Canadian going to play for Canada, maybe."
Whether he was being intentionally xenophobic does not matter.

He's not being xenophobic, just stupid and selfish.

He is not being intentionally xenophobic, I agree. But his inadvertent prejudice is still unacceptable.

I think it does for future players signing with the sens and how they are viewed in not only Sweden but Europe
He probably comes out this week and clarifies
But there is a big difference between as said above being xenophobic or being stupid
