I assume that the players who found Smyth to be a dirty rat also loathe Tkachuk and eagerly await his trade?

You're embarrassing yourself more than usual.

So you asked for a single example, C's provided 5 with the last one being Smyth wearing a C on a team Canada jersey, and then you respond "is that all you can come up with?"
C's isnt the one getting embarrassed here

Smyth laid it on the line every game and earned my respect for his commitment to Team Canada. Willing to go to the tough areas but I never felt that he was a cheap shot artist like Kessler Burrows Torres etc. Would have taken him on my team in his prime.

If those are the best 5 examples he could come up with then C is definitely the one getting embarassed here.
Smyth isn't a dirty player.
if you are looking for footage showing a dirty player, watch the hit on him that spawned this thread.

You could put together that type of footage from a good chunk of NHLers in less than one season of play. Heck for some it's a weeks worth of work.

but do you agree with him that Smyth is a dirty cheap shot no good rat like cooke, burrows, torres, etc..
from where I sit, C is just showing blind hatred more than anything else.
pretty well every player has given an elbow to another or had an accidental knee on knee hit, but very few intentionally target the head and attempt to injure another player
smyth was not one of those dirty players.

I would bet that the majority of NHL players who were in the league when he was, would not say they thought of him as a dirty player. Torres, Cooke... come on now.

I thought Smyth was overrated because he was really the only good player on that team most of the time. But I never really thought of him as dirty. Certainly no dirtier than, say, Giordano can be.

I was there as well, although I remember it differently. Skipped my second day of University for it and showed up at 7 am outside Father David Bauer.
Got Gretzky, Lemieux, Iginla, Gagne, Pronger, Kariya, Recchi and Kelly Hrudey to sign. Mike Peca was going to walk straight to the bus, but we started an "#######" chant and he finally came over and signed a few jerseys, but not mine as I called him an #######. I think Pierre McGuire may have been there as well and showed us his Stanley Cup ring from his time with the Pens, but that was before anyone knew who he was.

How long the Generals will be without Sheen in their lineup is still to be determined, though it will be at least three games as per Hockey Canada rules regarding match penalties.
Smyth was there to watch Tuesday's game in Stony Plain, but a timeline for his return to the Eagles lineup is still unknown.
|
There is also an interview with the GM for the Generals Jeff McInnis "about a half steam boat late".

While I dont consider him to be in the same tier as Cooke, Burrows or torres, Some of his antics are questionable.
Did any of you even bothered to watch some of those video examples? Smyth clearly wanted to clock some of those guys with his elbow. He even received a match penalty and left the game for his elbow on Kunitz.
Also that last one with Smyth doing his best lumberjack impression taking full slashes at the defender's ankles. All of you were completely avoiding this one as its clear as day what Smyth was trying to do. Embarrassing how he wore a letter for team Canada with that garbage

I played 5 and 6 a side soccer, still play pick up.
We had a couple of guys who played for the white caps come out and play on a team that we had to play against, both younger faster and immensely more talented, not sure what the hell they were doing playing against a bunch of old plonkers, that said our reaction was fairly clear, we took the little sods out, ticked us off they were essentially screwing up the balance of the teams.

but are so you're saying laying smyth out like this was ok because he's a former NHL player and it's not fair he's better than many of the players?
that's the impression you're giving. it's ok for poor sports take out their frustrations on the former pros.
this isn't a league of some old plonkers playing for fun. it's pretty high level competitive hockey. not like Smyth joined a beer league to show some 50 somethings up.

No, not what I meant at all, and 'taken out' in soccer is a lot different from 'taken out' in hockey, you get a bruised ankle or scraped knees at worst.
I was wondering though if Smyth was immeasurably better than the other players he was playing against, whether him being on the team makes that team 'unstoppable' because if that is the case while it doesn't excuse the hit it makes the frustrations that lead up to this kind of goonery more likely,

IIRC Fleury played at this level fairly soon after he left the NHL.

He played for the Horse Lake Thunder in 2005 I think.
They no longer have a team, IIRC.
I have been to a number of games in this league, Bentley, Sylvan Lake (when they had a team), Innisfail. It is good fast enjoyable hockey.

It appears many on here have romanticized the legacy of Ryan Smyth. The love he had for the game was admirable as was his willingness to go to the dirty areas (with complete disregard for his personal safety) but I had no such fondness for him when he played against us regularly and would routinely be dishing out dirty plays much to the ire of the Flames and their fans.
I remember distinctly the player Ryan Smyth was and when he played against Calgary I never thought to myself “Oh, wouldn’t I love #94 on the Flames”. No. Never.
That being said, elbows delivered like that on Ryan Smyth have no place in the game whether it be at the professional level or otherwise. Let’s hope there isn’t any permanent damage.
