Seems to be a lot like what he did a couple years ago down the stretch and into the playoffs.
Maybe not sustainable all year, but I think the Flames have really figured out how to properly utilize the guy.

One thing that nobody I think brought up is Versteeg and Edmonton. Maybe Edmonton should have promised Versteeg a larger role on the team out of training camp? Haha Oilers lose in a shootout against the Pens, and the Flames win with Versteeg's shootout goal. Suck it grease faces!
There isn't a single Flame that has been playing bad. Even the whipping boys like Chiasson, Brouwer and Wideman are all contributing and really making an impact. This is how winning teams roll - from top to bottom, their players help drive those wins. That is what makes Pittsburgh so damn good right now, even in spite of the injuries. You have to really love what you are seeing as a fan of the Flames.
The only thing that was disappointing about last night was LA losing. I don't worry at all about the cushion for the Flames. I was hoping for a 3 point game and for the greasers to inch closer to being out.
|
I was thinking about what you said in the last para. I've gone from hoping LA lose, to praying they win.
I cannot believe how this season has turned.

According to the Pittsburg broadcast team, Flames have now won 4 straight against tne Pens. Can that be true?

They outshot the Pens so that means they were the better team according to their fans. Moral victory. They do it after every loss.

I really hope they find a way to bring him back next year, Engelland has been massive for the team this year.

Actually he has been good his entire tenure with the Flames.
At times he was slotted ahead of where he should be, but that was a coaching decision...not his. Also injuries played into that. Yet people absolutely rag-dolled the guy because...well...because that's what CP does at times.
Really good player who plays the game right, never cheats himself or his club and is a tough hombre. Something this club has needed since the day he joined.
Great signing by Treliving who also got clobbered for it, particularly at the time.

His first season was pretty terrible. Bounced back and has been great in years two and three however. One of those rare contracts to an older player you wish was a year longer.

Wasn't his first year the year Gio went down and Engelland played on the top pairing with Brodie down the stretch and into the playoffs?
I think he's been good throughout his entire contract. He makes the odd mistake, but so does Gio, Brodie, and Hamilton. There is no perfect defenseman (well not since Lidstrom retired).
I think the fact that his presence in the lineup allows the team to NOT dress a pure enforcer makes him much more valuable than just a third pairing guy. This was aluded to by Penguins fans in the ATL; they love Engelland.

Flames fans when Flames beat Pittsburgh 4 games in a row: Wow that's a cool stat, but i'd never want to play them in the playoffs
Oilers fans when Oilers beat Flames 4 games in a row: I hope we play them in the playoffs, regardless of them winning 10 in a row this is an easy sweep for us.

Backlund was just on the Fan 590 with Andrew Walker. Talked about how big the lockout year was for rebuilding his confidence by playing in Sweden. Since then he has just developed the mentality of being the best player on the ice. When asked if the Flames wanted to avoid Anaheim in the first round of the playoffs, Backlund said they don't care who they get in the playoffs - they are just looking forward to getting back to them.

I would love to play them in playoffs, as that would mean it was the finals.

Yah that was worded poorly.
I just mean our fan base in general is educated enough to know that 4 wins in the regular season doesn't mean we'll own that same team in the playoffs which the losers up north believe is the case.

Flames have swept the Wild and the Pens
Oiler logic means they are better than those teams

Do you guys expect them to admit the Flames are better?
Didn't see any flames fans admitting that here when we were just 3 points back.

Why would we admit to something that's not true? Even when the Oiler's were 9 points ahead, even when they swept the Flames, I believed that there was no way that they had a better built team then the Flames.
I was pissed at the Flames. They were a discombobulated team that wasn't playing for each other or listening to their coach. But I believed that the Flames collection of players > Oilers.

The Oilers have always been a one-line team with a terrific goalie. At no point were they better than the Flames.

I may have just stolen this and put it up on HF.

Yeah, Flames are a balanced team.
I'm not convinced the Oilers will ever be balanced with a player like McDavid on the team - he'll need an astronomical salary soon, and I don't think they will be able to buy his UFA years (pretty sure he'll be 4 x max until UFA starts). That is coupled with some dead-weight up there. I don't think the math works, and in 2017 a single player won't win you a Cup.
By the time Oilers balance out contracts and assemble a good enough support cast he will be a UFA (in his case 7 years = 25 years old, so 5 more years?) and IMO will head to TO to win a cup there with that team's collection of stars.

the thing I love most about this PGT is the guys who go "oh no, it's already around midnight!" ...
... and you read this here in Europe the following day, tired AF, and just think "pfff, rookies"
