Still stand by my original statement that I wouldn't be opposed to a 2-3 year extension for similar money.

I think Stone has really helped solidify our defense and Elliott seems to be benefitting from that.

I feel Elliott is a solid goalie to go forward with. If there was a chance to get a guy like Bishop at a reasonable price, I'd see a swap as something to go for, but I'm really pretty happy with Elliott in net. I don't see it as a significant immediate need.

Im not going to completely be sold on Elliott yet until I see what he can do in the playoffs (assuming we get in). He's really turned around his regular season. But the Blues were dogged by poor playoff performances and goaltending was always a big part of that. If he has good playoff performance I would absolutely re-sign him.

Remember, re-signing him will also cost us a 3rd round pick which you do have to take into consideration as well.

I'm certainly not opposed to re-signing him. Elliott's awful stats this season are in large part due to how horribly this team played during GG's first 16GP behind the bench. Now I'm not completely absolving Elliott here, as there were some real stinkers that got by him, but I can acknowledge that it's very much a mental game and especially for goaltenders, and his confidence wasn't there at the start of the season.

If we break games 1-16 out of the stat-line, it looks like:

Games 1-16 (25% of season-to-date)
Team Record: 5-10-1
Elliott's Record: 3-8-0
Elliott's SV%: .882

Games 17-64 (75% of season-to-date)
Team Record: 31-16-3
Elliott's Record: 13-7-3
Elliott's SV%: .912

The numbers lean even further in Elliott's favor if you break out the games since Wideman has been replaced by Stone, but I won't do that because of the sample size (4GP).

TLDR; if Elliott can maintain his strong play down the stretch and into the playoffs, I'd be on-board with re-signing him

I think Treliving will keep all his options open. From now until the draft I'm sure he's going to be looking at acquiring a younger goaltender from a team. If Elliott continues this play into a playoff series I think you have to seriously consider re-signing him as I think the market will be soft in free agency and he won't command a huge premium compared to Bishop who has the injury history and likely higher money demands.

Elliott's play has been really impressive of late, but with the way he started the season I think that it is only reasonable for the Flames to wait and see if he can maintain it. I forget which poster did it, but there was an interesting breakdown of Elliott's season last year where he struggled in the first half as well and then was lights out from then on.

That is a fairly concerning trend and might make the Flames think twice about running with him as the starter over the medium term. For me, if he's willing to sign a 2-3 year deal below $4 million, then I think the Flames ought to do it. If he wants more term or more money than that, then they should take a look at the goalie market in the summer and look to see if there is an option that isn't too expensive.

Should probably get on this.

I'd offer him 3 x $4 million or 4 x $4 million and hope he bites.

I'd also offer Johnson 2 x $2 million.

Would be a bargain to have both these guys locked up for $6 million total, and those terms would be good too. Give our stable of young goalies time to marinate properly.

not sure why Elliot should still get penalized for his poor play at the beginning of the year? Brodie, as an example, was awful... really awful for the first quarter of the year...was that Brodie? or adjusting to a new system and new staff?

New city, new team mates... the entire team was adjusting to a new system and a new coaching staff.

Now, is he as good as this 9 game winning streak? No... no one can play like that for a whole season...

He pretty much carried STL in the playoffs too, so i am confident that he'll perform well in the playoffs.

For me, resigning him is looking like a no brainer, with the expansion draft exposure being the only major question mark left imo.

edit: and his contract demands of course need to be reasonable

And yes, I do think it's important to separate out this team's first 16GP of the season. It was horrendous hockey from everyone.

The Flames would just protect Elliott in the expansion draft instead of McCollum. No worries on that front. I would still wait until after the playoffs are over before talking contract. I wouldn't do more than 3 years on a deal if the Flames do decide to sign him.

you're right of course... not sure why i was thinking the expansion draft would be an issue...

i understand why people want to see how he does in the playoffs however...

my guess is that he does a solid job...and a bird in hand is better than two in the bush as they are wont to say

I would if I was Treliving, but regardless, I'm sure the Flames have a plan and that it was well thought out and not a reaction to a small sample of games, good or bad.

I think the way this season has played out shows that the management of this team is committed to a plan that they have in place, and they are willing to see it through because they believe in it.

Fans can be forgiven for rushing to judgement on things like personnel and coaching decisions because we don't have access to the plan, so we are out of context, but I try and remind myself to trust the process.

All the decisions the Flames management have made in the past year seem to be coming to fruition at the right time. I'm good with whatever they want to do with goaltending at this point.

I'd keep both guys on the tandem now that they are settled in. If a kid steals a spot, trade one of the vets for assets.

Sign Elliot for sure, and try and sign Johnston(sp) as well. Elliot has proven he is a top tier goalie.

Without a doubt. The guy is an elite goalie. He had a rough start but so did Gaudreau, Monahan, Brodie...

And he's gonna be cheaper than a guy like Bishop.

3 years, $4.5M seems fair. But I assume he would want a longer term.

I would still be careful about term given Elliott's age. A 2 year deal would be perfect.
