Default Matthew Phillips Highlights

First off felt it worth it to post in the main forum as we have a break and Phillips deserves some serious discussion IMO, kid is playing like a stud for Lowry in Victoria this year.

So I'm going through the vids available for the Royals and jotting down Phillips notes and the times they occur. I've marked each video as game # ect. But I kinda feel like they don't have every game of the year up. Going by month so here's the month of October! Enjoy!

Spoiler!

Way too small to ever play in the NHL.

He is the leading scorer on his team by a huge margin. I did not know that, and it is good to see.

March highlights so far!

Phillips clinched a playoff berth with his OT goal on the 4th:
Story

Quote:
With his two goals, Phillips tied the Royals’ record for most markers in a single season with 46. The previous mark was set by Tyler Soy last season. The 5-6, 141 lb forward is now only six goals away from breaking the single season franchise record for most markers at 51, set by former Chilliwack Bruin Ryan Howse during the 2010-11 campaign.
Game 37 Spokane Chiefs / Mar 3rd

0:29 - Takes a point shot in a bad spot while battling, looks hurt
2:18 - looks to be ok, primary Assist on a buzzer beater jam play
3:13 - Keeps and shoots on a 2 on 1, stopped, waits in front for the one time go ahead Goal!
Game 38 Spokane Chiefs / Mar 4th

1:10 - Walks in and snipes a shot top corner, Goal!
2:27 - Screens and battles in front, goal
3:05 - Good work in front, tries to jam it in
4:07 - Starts the play, helps cycle, OT winner / playoff berth clincher!

Very awesome to see:

Most goals by 18 @ 46
Tied for 2nd in the WHL
Most assists by 2 @ 40
Tied for 20th in the WHL
Most points by 20 @ 86
8th in the WHL
Best +\- by 14 @ +41
6th in PIMS with 48

Next best PPG average is Tyler Soy, who is 1/2 a foot taller, 30 lbs heavier and 14 months older.

Soy - Is at a 1.31 pace good for 94 Pts over 72 games
Phillips - Is at a 1.365 pace good for 98 Pts over 72 games

Here's to hoping for a memorial cup appearance for MP!

They (VR) are not even considered that strong this year, so I can't see a Memorial Cup appearance. POs though, so anything can happen I guess.

As it sits all of our WHL prospects will be in the playoffs, should be fun to follow for sure!

Phillips went 13 GP 5 G 3 A 8 Pts last playoffs, hopefully he continues to build here.

Anytime greentree

It's probably because of Gaudreau but I can't help but be excited about this prospect. Don't get me wrong my expectations are completely tempered, I realize he's not setting the league on fire or anything and by no means is he even guaranteed to be even a fringe NHLer at this point but he's seeming to grasp the 200 foot aspect of the game and at a young age. A lot of the points in what I have compiled are PP points and MP is sitting with a very favourable +/- which supports the thought that he's a very team first type of player. He's the motor for the Royals right now, all of the above is very promising stuff for sure.

If anyone in the Flames is a true dark horse to twist the coaching staffs arm next summer it's this pick IMO, Phillips is my dark horse prospect pick all day.

I also watch a number of Royals games and have to concur that MP is a great dark horse pick. I still have some concerns with his size though and that is likely why he went in the 6th round.

I've posted a number of times on Phillips in the CHL prospect thread so if you want to see more game analysis go check it out. I watch him play as much as I can here in Victoria so I can say he truly is a gifted player, at the WHL level he's dominant and the Royals rely on him heavily along with Soy, but Phillips is without a doubt their best player. Even with watching him on a regular basis it's so hard for me to project what he will be. He's not a perimeter player as he is always around the net, and is very good and at stripping the puck in the neutral zone. His shot is deceptive and quick, he is a shifty skater with good speed but thats not the only way he gets his goals. His hands around the net is what truly gets me excited about him, as he has a great ability to locate loose pucks and uses his soft hands to score many of his goals in tight. Teams this season have made an emphasis at trying to stop him, as he has been targeted a lot more this season than last but it has not detoured him from going to the tough areas. He's truly a treat to watch and am thrilled that he's in the Flames system. His game has gone to another level this year and he's almost single handily willed Victoria back to the playoffs after a tough beginning of the season. He's small and there's nothing changing that but he has immense talent and I really think he could be something special.

Ya, Vic has always had a below average blue line and I think this will be their downfall. They also are a very small but skilled team. Phillips isn't even the smallest player, as they have another guy who is 5'5. One thing I can say for sure is if they go deep in the playoffs it will be because of Phillips. Would love for a Rockets-Royals matchup. Those games have been heated all year and would be awesome to see as a Flames fan. Dube put on a show last time he was in Vic.

I'd say he has a much better chance then any other player drafted in the 5th or 6th round. Development is key which is why I want him to play vs men asap. He will play in the AHL and that will ultimately be the deciding factor if he ever will sniff the big club. 2 goals behind the WHL scoring lead, his talent is legit and would be close minded to say he will never play in the NHL

I think one of the best parts of Matthew is that he is a natural right shooting right winger something we've lacked organizationally for quite sometime. Hoping Matthew pans out, so far he's consistently improved year over year.
