With a set-up guy like Gaudreau, and to a lesser extent Monahan, you could have an inanimate carbon rod putting in goals. We need a winger that can set-up the other 2 the same way.
Is Anson Carter still available?

I like him, and would welcome him back (depending on cap hit and term of course). He is cheap filler that helps put up points, and that helps young guys develop as well IMO. I would probably want to see wait until after the NHL entry draft and use that week to see where he fits in. At least until after the expansion draft, but I would really rather wait and see what shakes out around the NHL entry draft..

Let's wait and see how he does in the playoffs.

Isn't is awesome we very likely can say that.

i like Versteeg...

if we can sign him to a 1 or 2 year contract at something < 1.5 million, i think he'd be an asset for the club

Thing about Versteeg is, he's one of the most tradable assets in the league today. Re-sign him, if he is ousted by another player, he's easily tradable.

I missed this but what happened during his Florida years?

2012–13 Florida Panthers NHL 10 2 2 4 8 — — — — —
2013–14 Florida Panthers NHL 18 2 5 7 9

Only 10 and 18 games played those 2 seasons?

2012-13 was a short year and he was injured.

2013-14, he was traded to Chicago, where he won his second Cup the next year.

Term and price will dictate. He has definitely helped the team. 2 years at 1.5 per?
Bet another team takes him for more.

I wonder if he will be this seasons Stempniak and get an overpriced contract after overachieving for a PTO signing. 1x1 otherwise let him walk.

Just because Versteeg signed with the Flames on a short term/low dollar contract, doesn't mean he's now in that situation for the rest of his career. He's clearly shown he's still a top 9 winger in this league, and he should be paid as such. Would not surprise me to see him signed at 2.5M. In today's game, that's market value for what he has produced this season.

That said, I don't think Calgary is looking at rewarding players for what they've done anymore. They are keenly focused on what you are going to do in the future. For that reason, they may offer 1.5-2M on a shorter term deal. He may very well sign elsewhere because of it, which would be a real shame, I think he's been a great fit here and his playmaking abilities wouldn't be easily replaced.

Calgary has given him a real chance to shine, playing on the top PP unit for most of the season. Perhaps he'll take a lower value deal to keep himself on a team that plays to his strengths. He's made a lot of money in his career already, maybe that's not the defining decision maker this time around, much like last year.

Well he had more points last season and is on pace for less this season and had to get a last minute signing via PTO so I doubt his point totals is what is keeping teams from signing him to an over priced contract.

He got more points last season and didn't get close to $2.5 million.

Personally the way I see it is the Flames signed Brouwer with the hopes of losing him in the expansion. If that's how it goes I see the line-up like this in the off-season:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Jankowski - Lazar
Bouma - Stajan - Hathaway

Pushing: Poirier, Klimchuk, Mangiapane, to a lesser extent Tuulola, Dube, Phillips etc.

Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Stone
Bartkowski - Kylington/Andersson/Hickey
Kulak

Elliott
Johnson

I just don't see a fit for Versteeg moving forward, too many guys will be pushing at camp and there is already so much competition.

Would rather see a chance given to one of the kids pushing for a top 9 spot... Poirier, klimchuk, mangiapane, jankowski, shinkaruk, etc.

Though I do like what versteeg brings most of the time. Would just really like to see one of those guys step up and take a spot.

Do you reply to posts before you even read them completely? I said he's overachieving for being a PTO signing therefor may be this year's Stempniak and get a decent contract for it.

For me, the best course of action is to have Janko in the AHL for another season, and then when Stajan is off the books in '18, bring Jankowski in as the 4th centre and have him earn the promotion up the line-up at the NHL level.

Patience with Bennett and Janko will pay off in the long run.

He wants to stay in Calgary and would sign for less in Calgary than elsewhere but it isn't going to be significantly less. It all depends on how much The Flames want to bring him back.

What difference does it make if he was on a PTO or not? I'm failing to see your logic.

Versteeg had more points last season and is on pace for about the same or less this season so why would him overachieving as a PTO make a difference? He had 38 points last season and still found himself on a PTO just to get a contract this year. Why would he get a decent contract next season for getting the same or less points?

Last season he was .48 ppg @ 3.5M . This year he is .45 ppg @ 950K. Believe it or not the contracts guys are signed to and the money term they start asking for effects how much attention they they are going to garner in the offseason. It's not crazy to think someone offers versteeg a couple million a year now that he is over achieving his contract. It's a simple concept. It's like if Bouma was making 700K per right now he could probably find a home somewhere after this contract. At 2.2 nobody wants anything to do with him even in his next contract - he's an underachiever.
