Ya... I didn't realize a guy crying was now the sacred cow of CP. Could have fooled me. I made fun of Smyth relentlessly that day and then his last game against Edmonton when he was on the bench crying with 5 minutes left in the freaking game.
And ya, good player. (did someone say great? lol) I respect his ties to the city and the emotions with which he played the game. But the tv guys now need a certain amount of points or games played in order to relate a story like that? Please. Funny enough, everyone who jumped on those 2 in this thread have never played a game in the NHL, so they are off limits to the likes of you.
I want more stories like this. I believe that Ryan Smyth can handle it and is not some fragile egg shell of a man that a humorous story told at his expense will cause him any real strife. Good on Colby and Whitney, and bring on more stories of hilarious in game chirps please!

I have to admit that it was pretty funny, but way over the line. I actually laughed, but don't think it was very professional to have on air on a show like that.
Smyth was always a good guy on and off the ice.

Reading that thread on HF is absolutely hilarious. I thought the segment was a little over the line but after reading that thread I'm very happy it happened.

I'll admit it was classless garbage to bring up on the show, but the fact that they actually chirped him like on the ice? That would have been priceless!
Crying because you got traded? That is well within the realm of acceptability in terms of on-ice trashing.

Which is irrelevant. The NHL's biggest broadcaster is held to a higher standard than fans on a message board. The context of the appropriateness of their comments is tied to the former.

The guy got paid $52 million US over his career. I'll trade him my past and future career earnings for his, and even if that means I get mocked on a sports show every day or week or month, for the rest of my life, that's fine with me. Even on the ice where jocularity rules, make fun of me all you want, its part of the psychological game.

Since when is showing emotion in the top pro league of a sport in the world something to be mocked and belittled? They've probably cried like that a several points in their adult lives, it just wasn't on camera. Lol doesn't give them reigns to talk down to a guy that's probably happily well off now.
Dunno who in their right mind would hire such pompous asses.

Hes a Professional Hockey player, Professional Hockey players get traded from time to time and they have to deal with that with, well, professionalism.
His fellow professionals are well within their rights to chirp him for that.

Its not just because he was crying, it was 'why.'
Because he got traded. Out of Edmonton. Most people are wearing Party Hats and blowing into noisemakers when that happens.
But again, as I've said before, the vast majority of players who are traded dont cry about it. How many times have you watched TradeCentre and nobody cries? Most of the time I'd bet.

Chirping on the ice is one thing, and in my opinion this would be fair game. But how much of what is said in-game is okay to say on-air, before a large audience, years later? That's the part that bothers me.

As someone said... great story at the bar. But that was completely unprofessional to bring on-ice stuff to the TV. He crossed a line.
The fact that Smith's tears were/are very mockable is irrelevant - that was not the place to mock him.

Is it the same Whitney that played 9 games in Edmonton and traded to Florida without shedding a tear? That Ray Whitney played 1330 NHL games with 385 goals and 679 assists.

I didn't remember there was a second Whitney. I didn't realize there were two and both played in Edmonton. I remembered only the one that played junior in Spokane.

I love and respect Smyth as much as any player in the league, but I still laughed at that story.
As much as we all want these guys to be philanthropists and gentlemen, remember the culture they've grown up in. They're still jocks. Have you met jocks? They're not the most emotionally evolved people out there.
I'm sure Ryan Smyth knew those kinds of chirps were coming. I don't really feel bad for him.

Nope not okay with it. There is a major problem male depression and even suicide and men need to know there is nothing wrong with expressing their emotions and even crying. These idiots making fun of Ryan Smyth are not helping.
Back onto the topic of the Oilers being no good though the Smyth trade was a great example of the franchise ineptitude. He was traded over a couple hundred thousand dollars and the Oilers pretty much got nothing in return.
