Sessions on impeaching Bill Clinton in 1999. Yup.

This literally changes nothing. There's been indictable offences all along the way. How is this different?

I don't want any of this minor #### to be what takes them down, I want it to be working with a foreign intelligence service to influence an election.

They'll say he meant that he didn't have contact with the Russians in the context of the campaign at the confirmation hearing. The questionnaire already asks with respect to the campaign so that's not demonstrably a lie.

But he doesn't remember what he talked about!
"In the case of the September meeting, one department official who came to the defense of the attorney general said, “There’s just not strong recollection of what was said.”"
They can't say he didn't talk about the campaign if he doesn't remember what he said to the Russian Ambassador a few months ago. They might have talked about nothing other than the campaign! He just doesn't know!
I love when politicians give that response. It screams "I'm either lying, or I'm totally incompetent and can't remember what we talked about in this high-level meeting held in my office".

It's up to the Attorney General to make the decision to bring perjury charges. Sessions is the AG? Well then, Sessions should recuse himself to allow an impartial investigation. But he won't. Congress could appoint an independent counsel to investigate, but so far the GOP Congress refuses to hold the Trump admin accountable for anything, so that's not going to happen. So then it falls on the media to pressure Congress to act, but that will just get chalked up to "fake news," and the mean old media attacking poor little Donald and his admin. So unfair, why don't they just let him do whatever he wants, because he just wants to make America great again! Then it is up to The People to protest and send a message to their representatives to take action. But that will be blown off as whiny snowflake Liberals refusing to accept their team lost. Get over it already, you lost! I won the Electoral College!!
Trump has manuvered everyone into his pocket. He's untouchable.

I'm mostly posting this for the quote in the article, but still a good read:
Quote:
The whole thing is sort of like someone selling you a $35 organic cheeseburger and then offering you $3 off as a gesture of goodwill. The burger-slinger will tell you that organic burgers are just more expensive — like green energy! — but organic burgers only get to be that expensive if the cook has a nasty habit of burning every second burger and occasionally lighting his hair on fire.

The penalty for lying under oath should be far harsher for an attorney general than Joe plumber.

Should be, yes. But have you ever read about those stories of people wrongly convicted. The lawyers, judges, police who helped railroad them are never punished in anyway meaningful. Not that any of them were even tried.

Or....
The heat is being turned up, and most Americans want an investigation. GOP could face a midterm slaughter if they try to keep ignoring this. At the end of the day, as always, self-survival wins. If they thought they could bury this for another 20 months, they would. But that just isn't possible in today's climate.
