Edmonton's #1 starting goaltender getting injured during the playoffs? Oilers don't need a backup 'tender, cause that'll never happen. (See: Roloson, Dwayne)

I thought they had three #1 goalies that year.

The Oilers had three goalies on the roster but only Roloson was considered a #1.
The funny part was in game one of the finals they had Conklin backing up who became the losing goalie after the Roloson injury. Then the remaining 6 games were played by Jussi Markkanen. If Markkanen was their 2nd choice goalie, why was Conklin backing up in Game 1?

Pretty sure we were told Conklin was better than Broduer according to some calculation by Mudcrunch.

They'd been alternating Conklin and Markkanen as the backup all through the playoffs. The way Conklin botched the play on the game winning goal, the coaching staff had concerns with him bouncing back mentally from such a monumental gaffe. They went with Markkanen in game two and he held the net for the remainder of the series.

I remember Markkanen was great that series, totally unexpected. I never thought he could play in the nhl watching him in Finland.

Funny how Gretzky never really seemed to associate with the Oilers at all (outside of Heritage Classic games and his own jersey retirement) over all these years since he retired. I lived there for almost a decade recently and I don't ever recall seeing him doing stuff like this. Then they land McDavid, now all of a sudden he's Edmonton's greatest son again, taking part in all these Oiler-related functions. Think he's like every Oilers fan when they won the McDavid lottery in just assuming a new dynasty will be born, and he wants in on the party.
It reminds me of some deadbeat dad who ditches his kid and baby mama his whole life. Then kid grows up to be an athletic stud and turns pro, then suddenly daddy wants to be a part of his life. How convenient..

Taking a while to get to 5000

Wasn't Conklin the one who got into a fender bender on his way to the airport after he was traded? He couldn't wait to get out. I may be remembering this wrong.

The Oilers are boned no matter what.

The Flames rode Kiprusoff to the ground, with as much as 76 games in one season, and Talbot, as good as he has been, is not Kiprusoff. And we all know the Flames performance in the playoffs aside from 2003-04 (which coincidentally he only played 65 games). Talbot will be dead tired by the playoffs, and the Oilers will start blaming their goalie once they inevitably fall to no good.

If I was playing the Oilers in the playoffs, one of my strategy points would be to nudge and bump Talbot as much as possible and try to wear him out. He's not only played a lot of games, but that defense is still making him work really hard for the wins.
A couple of good bumps here and there and secret karate chops to the throat could do wonders.

The Rangers ran Price in the Conference Finals of 2014 and took him out when the Habs were flying high. Knocking out the #1 goalie is a proven practice. The Habs has a very good shot to win the Cup that year with Price in net, but had no adequate backup and cost them the series.

Net traffic increases and you get a little bit leash from the officials. I think if they make it those calls McDavid seemed to draw regularly is now just playoff hockey.

Gotcha, didn't even realize that. Haha that stuff got so shoved down my throat the 8 years I was there that I try to ignore what comes out of Katzville now.
I still wonder how much interest he would've even had about joining the payroll if not for McDavid. With his other business endeavors I can't imagine he's hurting for cash, why join the team now? Unlike other Oiler greats like Messier, it always felt to me like Gretz kept his distance from the team in comparison. Biased Flames fan opinion, but it still feels to me like he's chasing another ring, and/or to re-live the Oiler glory days (he suspects).

Hard to think the oil fall right out, as are currently 10 points clear of last wildcard spot... but they are primed for a quick post season exit with a worn out Talbot. They have a brutal record when Talbot doesn't start, so it's kinda catch 22 down the stretch.

As much as the 3 games we against the Kings is crucial for us, the Kings plan B is the three games against the Oilers. Can get that down to 4 with three wins and they have a game in hand.

You know the way the Kings play that there is a pretty good chance a large chunk of their games will be going into OT.
