Lazars stats look like he's struggled every year? 6 goals and 20 points is his career high.

For a 2nd?

Bleh. Swing and a miss unless he has a total turnaround here.

the conditional pick for Elliott is a 3rd round pick in 2018

Now that I've had a moment to sit and think about this trade... I don't get it. Where do they envision him playing in the line up? He asked for a trade out of Ottawa because he wasn't getting playing time but I can't see him bumping Brouwer to the 4th line and is he going to beat out Chiasson?

This is a weird one and the price of a 2nd rounder seems pretty high for a guy who we would be cursing if he had that kind of production here. That is worse than Freddie Hamilton's production, which I didn't think was possible.

Hopefully Dave Cameron knows something that we don't about Lazar.

Its basically a gamble to have a cheap guy who fits in with the age group of the core players. I'm fine with it. Maybe he turns it around and becomes a top six guy but suspect he'll top out more in the 3rd line/PK mold.

Corey Pronman from ESPN.com:

Calgary acquires Curtis Lazar. Lazar was considered one of the games top prospects under three years ago. He has yet to shown he can excel at the pro level and hit a wall in his age 21 season. On a talent level he's a very good skater with decent puck skills and shooting ability. He's a high character player who hustles every shift. The questions for him now is whether he has the creativity and overall hockey IQ to play well at an NHL pace. I can understand being a skeptic given his dismal season and underwhelming pro career to date but I wouldn't give up on a player like Lazar too quickly. It's entirely reasonable in my opinion that he could carve out a career as a useful third line forward.

Will the Flames try Lazar as a third line C and move Bennett to the wing?

Bleeding picks? Come off it. It's a horrible draft and we've been collecting picks for the last several years.

I wonder if JJ was put on waivers (and had to clear) as a condition of the trade with OTT; so that OTT could send him to the minors without having to put him on the waiver wire themselves.

If OTT claimed JJ off us on waivers, then OTT could not send JJ down to the AHL without going through waivers again, and they were afraid JJ would be claimed by another team.

In the end, no other team claimed him anyway, so OTT probably could have snuck him through waivers, but now that he's cleared, they know for sure.

He sounds pretty happy. Hopefully he can just go to Calgary and just play. Forget about the struggles this year, just go out there and relax. Maybe that's all he needs.

I do think a 2nd was slight overpayment.

Maybe a 4th and Poirier would've been more fair (as we don't have our third). Ex first rounder reclamation project for reclamation project.

At least make the 2nd conditional on playoff success.

I think the deal is okay, but more importantly I also think that there is nothing wrong with the "philosophical direction" that it signals. The core and the building blocks of this team are young and with high upsides. If the Flames are going to make a push in the next five years, then it will be on the backs of the players already in the system.

not sure who you guys expected to draft in the 2nd round of this years draft...chances are high it wouldn't have even been an NHLer

A bit of a risk, basically this says the Flames feel they have a better chance at developing Lazar into an NHL player then what they believe will be available in the 2nd round.

Not that big of a cut, even if it ends up being a miss.
