No one has called for a development ban in Canmore. In fact, Fuzz has called for more hotel development.
People have an insatiable desire to destroy the few good things we actually have for a bunch of crap we don't need. It pisses me off.

What? Bill has my exact argument down. I never said anything about willing to live in a cave and transport by foot. I'm saying that you're okay with the development levels for YOU to enjoy the wilderness, but are not okay with anything more than that.
For you to get to K-country to get away from all these people you hate, development had to happen (highway 40, hiking trails etc.). For some others, seeing Johnston canyon, or the top of Sulphur mountain could not happen until it was developed.
And you go re-read the original post, and tell me without any additional context, that Fuzz is pro-development. Fuzz finally made a non-NIMBY post afterwards where you can get a vision for what kinds of development are more desirable. That feedback is useful for a developer, not what the original post (and probably the next 10 posts or so), which is just vitriol and trying to get a veto on any development at all. From what I read, if the developer doesn't build a golf course and removes the casino, it'd be pretty darn close to what Fuzz wants for Canmore. Sure as hell couldn't get that feeling from the original post.

So the people of Canmore should consider electing officials and pressing the ones that they currently have to hire planning specialists to ensure that the town isn't planned by developers with a view only to their specific projects but create an ultimate goal of what future Canmore should be.
I don't particularly care what happens in Canmore as it isn't anything more than a convenient place to urinate, dispose of my sons car sick bags, and buy hamburgers on my way to somewhere else but if grocery stores are needed, take developers to task and make them include that in their plans for the benefit of the townspeople if they want their conference centre/Cold Stone Creamery.

Woooa! Pump the breaks there, chief! I still think a gondola, casino and BMO sized conference centre, complete with hotels and a Whistler sized village designed to capture the under-served Monaco millionaires market is wholly inappropriate for Canmore, particularity in the location they have. That upper bench should never have seen development. I stand by my original hyperbole and curse filled post, firmly.
What I was asked for was a 50 year vision, and I attempted to lay out a few rough ideas to fix what they have mangled. I would consider more hotels to serve demand, not to induce it. I recognize in a growth oriented world, we can't preserve everything exactly how we want it, but we should be very careful about how it is done.

I guess I'm getting labeled a NIMBY because I don't want this thing built. For the record, I don't live in Canmore nor have I ever, nor am I planning to. I don't know anybody that lives there either. To me it's something that belongs in a place like Calgary. Maybe the gondola wouldn't work but they could build it to the top of nose hill for all I care. I guess I do want to see it built in my backyard.

The world just needs more Gondolas.
If I were unreasonably wealthy I'd build a Gondola to the top of Mount Everest. And there would be a pub up there.
Thats the ticket!

Is there anyone who isn't something of a NIMBY?
I like the area I live in (Mission) and wouldn't want to see a 40 storey condo tower go up here. I don't mind if they are built in the Beltline, which is a five minute walk from my house, but I don't want it IMBY. I'm not against progress or economic development or whatever you want to call it, but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with liking things to stay the same, if you like 'em the way they are.
People seem to cry NIMBY mostly when it's not their backyard. I do it myself.
The horse seems to have long ago left the barn in Canmore, when it comes to commercial development, but if I lived there, I wouldn't want a giant convention centre either.

Thinking about it more the big issue is this dream of becoming an international destination for conferences. To me this isn't what Canmore should be.
Development around Canmore should be focused on being a world class sports / recreation facility for non mechanized pursuits. So while I might disagree with it on an animal impact standpoint putting in a lift for downhill biking / moguls / snowboard park facility in Canmore would serve the interest of what Canmore should be developed around. And I might concede a Gondola might fit in with that type of development. Still would likely be against it but the Casino/conference centre does not fit.

One thing about a conference centre is that he demand would be weighted toward weekdays. That would even things out, making more efficient use of the tourist infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, knick knack stores) already there. Of course, you'd need to size it appropriately to fill existing capacity, and it seems like this might be too big for that.
I do agree there is no place for a casino there, and I actually thought there was a moratorium on new casinos in the province at all.

This is a massive pipe dream... Getting a permit to build this now will be impossible. It was much easier in the 90's when no body cared about wildlife corridors. Three sisters mountain village was required to give land back originally approved for development because of the wildlife corridors. And, on the silvertip side of the valley (the sunny side), they close trails to mountain biking also because of wildlife corridors. Guy Turcotte will never get this approved.
And, it looks a little silly...

Is that a giant church in the middle? LOL.
Where did this image come from? Conspicuously missing: Gondola. This looks like a mini Whistler.

Now that we've beat the zero or not zero development horse to death, on to what type (assuming some).
That rendering seems insane. Who the hell is going to occupy all that. Whistler works because there is a massive ski hill to anchor off of. Silver Tip has...a golf course and some hikes. Its not even that that won't get approved, I just can't imagine it being profitable!
Also for the record I think a casino is dumb. It just doesn't make sense for in the middle of the mountains. Any conferences that value a casino will just go to Vegas or at least stick in Calgary. Any tourists that value a casino will just freakin go to one of the many in Calgary.

The image has been around for a long long time. Silvertip resorts still has it up on their site. They basically just slapped a gondola on it now.
