Just say no to rentals. Flames will be in a battle for their lives down the stretch here - we're effectively in playoff hockey, and that's great development time. Play the all mighty hell out of Hamilton, Gaudreau, Bennett, Tkachuk, Ferland, and Monahan and see where they can take us. If you want to add a similar long-term core piece (by paying a huge price), go for it. Don't pay for a rental.

Fair points. I would not be disappointed to see the Flames do nothing.
Edit: Of course I mean from here on out. Not discounting whats already been done.

The Flames have done something already. If they do no more, I know that it won't be because Treliving didn't investigate.

Acquiring a #4 and #6 D is a pretty big play for a trade deadline.

I agree. The only rental that Treliving should be going for is a player who he wants to have a chance at locking up long term before the player hits free agency. A player for whom he also isn't mortgaging the future to acquire.
Really, based on everything he's said, Treliving is only adding cheap depth players, and maybe those depth players are young and still have term.

if the price isn't too high for Boyle, I would be all for it. Depth is great and having him wouldn't hurt our playoff push. I agree though, don't sacrifice anything of value for a rental. So far I like what Tre has done, and I wouldn't be too put out if he didn't make any more moves. Having Wideman riding pine has been the best move so far this year.

I agree. I'd like to see them add a winger that will be here a while though.

I wonder what Ryan Strome would cost from the Islanders? They may not be able to protect him in expansion and he is a decent sized player, 24 and a right shot? 2nd+a couple prospects?

What would you think about the Flames trading for Grigorenko?
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=143915
He's 22, and has 19 points on the season. I can imagine the Aves will try shake things up, so he might not command a large cost. Also, there is room for improvement since he is still young, so the Flame wont be spending for a one year push. I wouldn't be angry if BT was looking for this type of deal, low key young players who fit into the long term plan.

Depends on cost. If it is for a prospect that doesn't have a future here and is at risk of being picked up for exp draft, best to get 20 games of a rental vs losing that asset for 0.
Agree, don't trade anything of value for a rental but if the price is right, don't rule it out.

Grigorenko
Strome
Armia
These are guys that Treliving should be looking at. Something we can plan to have beyond this current season and a possible solution for the RW.

I don't know. I feel like we already tried a player like him in the 90s. Think Aaron Gavey.

I suppose with Anthony Mantha making the leap now, he is probably no longer in Detroit's doghouse. Too bad, but if he is at all available, he is another one that would be perfect for this team.

looks like the Devils may have found a buyer for Quincey or at least expect to find a buyer before the deadline:
Mike Morreale @mikemorrealeNHL
Kyle Qiuincey being held out of game tonight. Healthy scratch

A deal between the Flames and the Aves is a possibility.
The Aves desperately need a D man and the Flames can afford to trade Jokipakka, Kulak, or Wortherspoon without really hurting their current roster, or prospect pool.

It's kind of weird - Wikipedia currently list Brian Boyle as an Edmonton Oilers. Cripes, that team is starting to get scary if they're loading up more large guys. The Flames need to load up on size arsenal as well. 6'6" is frickin HUGE! (say it with a silent H).

The only way I can see a rental making sense for the Flames is if the acquisition cost is super low AND if they can shed Wideman's salary.
Heck, at this point, shedding anything possible from Wideman to absorb bonus overages would be a win. Kulak is a perfectly good replacement to still have 8 NHL-proven D for playoff depth, and even Wotherspoon would be better now.
If you can get a RW who can play in the top 9, but also be effective on the 4th line (essentially, depth/injury insurance) and that is super cheap, that may be the only thing in terms of rentals to look at.
Now, if you can swing a deal for a guy who fits in the top 9 long term, that is a trade to consider. It would mean leaving Brouwer exposed, which to me is not a bad thing - either he goes and you retool the lines, or he is left and Vegas takes a younger guy like Kulak, Jokipakka, Shinkaruk, etc.

Fans didn't seem to mind paying for the rental Michael Stone.
