Even on transborder flights, customs officials don't generally meet the airplane.

White House strategist Steve Bannon's hostility toward the press was on full display at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday, repeatedly referring to the news media as "the opposition party."

"They're corporatist, globalist media that are adamantly opposed to an economic nationalist agenda," Bannon said on stage at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. The media, Bannon asserted, is "going to get worse everyday."

"If you look at the opposition party," Bannon said referring to the media, "and how they portray the campaign, how they portrayed the transition, and how they are portraying the administration, it's always wrong. Just like they were dead wrong on the chaos of the campaign, and just like they were dead wrong on the chaos of the transition, they are absolutely dead wrong about what's going on today."

President Donald Trump's first month in office has been typified by his ongoing anatgonism toward the press. Bannon has clearly influenced that tenor, consistently referring the media as "the opposition party" -- a term that has been adopted by Trump. On Thursday, Bannon seemed to go out of his way to invoke the label.

House Republicans next week plan to derail a Democratic resolution that would have forced disclosure of President Donald Trump's potential ties with Russia and any possible business conflicts of interest, according to multiple House sources.

Seeking to avoid a full House vote on the so-called “resolution of inquiry” — a roll call that would be particularly embarrassing and divisive for the right — Republicans will send proposal by Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) to the House Judiciary Committee for a panel vote on Tuesday, two Democratic sources said. The GOP-controlled committee is expected to kill the resolution.

FBI refused White House request to knock down recent Trump-Russia stories


Washington (CNN)The FBI rejected a recent White House request to publicly knock down media reports about communications between Donald Trump's associates and Russians known to US intelligence during the 2016 presidential campaign, multiple US officials briefed on the matter tell CNN.

White House officials had sought the help of the bureau and other agencies investigating the Russia matter to say that the reports were wrong and that there had been no contacts, the officials said. The reports of the contacts were first published by The New York Times and CNN on February 14.

The direct communications between the White House and the FBI were unusual because of decade-old restrictions on such contacts. Such a request from the White House is a violation of procedures that limit communications with the FBI on pending investigations.

Several members of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees tell CNN that the congressional investigations are continuing into those alleged Russian contacts with the Trump campaign, despite Priebus' assertion that there is nothing to those reports.

On February 17, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence held a briefing with Comey. It's unclear what was said, but senators suggested there was new information discussed about Russia.

"Every briefing we go through we gain new information," said Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma, a member of the committee. Lankford declined to be more specific about the briefing.
