A win against Tampa means the snake rises! The red snake continues to pull away from the purple snake, and is 10 points up on it now. It maintained the 4 point deficit behind the green snake, but has a chance to move within 2 points if the Flames beat the Panthers on Friday night. The red snake is now 5.415 points below the black line, the closest it's been since after game #48. A 15-6-0 record in the final 21 regular season games will get the snake to the 96 point mark.

Trying to catch the green snake will be no small task, but separately nicely from that horrible, ugly purple snake.

We haven't taken enough games to overtime this year...and lost too many in regulation. the loser point makes such a difference in the standings.

When the Flames made the playoffs in the 2014-15 season, their record was 45-30-7. After game 61 they were 33-24-4. So they have the same number of OTLs as they did when they made it, but three less wins. The big difference was in 2014-15 they beat the Oilers all 4 times they played them. This year they lost all 4 games against Edmonton. If the Flames had beat Edmonton the 4 times this year, the record would be 35-21-4. They'd be 4 points up on the green snake, and 2.585 points above the black line. They would need only 22 points in the last 21 games to hit the 96 point mark.

squiggs, any chance you could plot the number of points held by the (wild card #2 slot) WC#2 team at the time?
For example, currently the Flames have played game #61 and have 66 points. The team in WC#2 (which is also the Flames) has 66 points, so the WC#2 snake would be at 66. Hypothetically, suppose after Flames' game #65 we get bypassed by LA, so LA is in the WC#2 spot with, 67 points, then the WC#2 snake would show LA's points since they are the WC#2 holder at the time of Flames game #65.
That would allow us to see how far above or below the Flames are compared to the current playoff qualifying cut-off at the time.

The snek cares not for WC spots. The snek's only concern is 96 points!

This is easily the most frustrating part of the season for me. Gifting the (c)Oil eight points that directly improved their playoff positioning is brutal. This is especially because (as you point out) those intra-divisional games against close rivals were so clearly identified as the reason we made the playoffs back in 2015.
I love costing the Oilers points in our games against them. Like that one year when we beat EDM 2-0 (I think) in The Chuck in game 82. Oilers needed to win to get playoffs. Iggy with an empty-netter...(if my memory serves me correctly). The fact that we weren't very competitive in the head-to-heads this season is super-aggravating.

Mandatory bump after a big win.
Looks like the green snake is about to go on a 5-0-1 run. Let's just go ahead and gain that one point on it over the next six, shall we? GFG. GSG.
