So in other words, put out their flames with gasoline

An interesting take on "Wideman effect" by ex ref Kerry Fraser. He certainly doesn't rule out that it could figure into the calls / non-calls.

When the deadline occurs the Flames will have played 64 games

Roughly 78% of Wideman's salary would have been paid.

Or around $1.2m remaining.

He actually admits to altering the competitive balance of a playoff game by sticking it to Shoenfeld and the Devils. A head coach clapping does not warrant an unsportsmanlike penalty regardless of what happened in the last game. Without throwing his fraternity under the bus in plain words he's essentially telling us that yes the Wideman Effect is real.

Referees are humans with emotions and biases: this is a problem. The solution? Replace them with robots, or at the very least, cyborgs.

Its one thing to make a bad or emotional call the night after an incident. Over a year later? Thats undermining the integrity of the game and the work and effort the players put into a season and a half. Not to mention robbing the paying fans of a competitive fair game.

If it ever came out that the refs colluded against the flames on the ice it could bankrupt the refs union. The Flames owners would be able to bring legal action against them. It would be really bad for the game.

As much as i hate the non-calls and the weak calls against I really hope that this isnt true as I love Hockey and would hate to see the damage it would cause.

We would all be entitled to sue them if that were the case, but I too hope it doesn't come to that.

That's how I interpret it as well.

Not to mention, potentially robbing the Calgary Flames organization, NHL, NHLPA and Rogers sportsnet of millions or tens of millions of dollars in lost revenue. Whether its from sell-out crowds, increase merchandise sales or increased television viewership the NHL benefits from having Calgary competitive and in the playoffs.

I know this was probably in jest, but in all seriousness, the chaos that is reffing is pretty bad. Let's put aside the Wideman thing for a minute and just look at the actions of the officials:

1) Linesman like to trick face off players with fake drops
2) Refs and linesman get hit all the time by sticks, pucks, bodies, etc
3) Refs and linesman get in the way sometimes, forcing turn overs or odd man rushes
4) Refs sometimes like to put their whistle away, although nobody knows when
5) Refs are inconsistent when making the same stick and obstruction calls
6) Sometimes Refs are quick to blow their whistle to stop plays
7) Refs often miss calls "behind the play"
8) You can't argue or appeal a ref anyways

So surely some more automation could be possible. There are surveillance equipment in casinos bigger than a rink that monitor micro facial expressions in real time, yet there are still behind the play penalties?

The guy's gonna be scratched until he's traded.
Willing to waive his NMC?

I'd say Ryan Leslie is blowing smoke otherwise he'd be on the first train out of town by now...

Bag of pucks would be plenty.

It's not just Leslie who is reporting this. Don't forget about the Guy in Pub.
