They need an experienced D who isn't a liability and is a house hold name, that's their biggest need - their forwards this year have been stellar and I can't see them making any major changes in terms of bodies going out via the trade route - they will lean on a pretty impressive prospect collection and picks in order to get their needs and if it's not enough I'm sure they are content to push for the playoffs with what they have and make the major changes in the off-season.
In short - Toronto laughs at Brouwer + Bart + 3rd for Komarov and hangs up the phone.
|
Actually Komarov is getting 2.95 M a year but still...hells no.
Komarov is pretty solid on the PK...plus Kadri and him make a good sandpaper line that can score goals.

Ugh...Leafs PP is doing just fine. They don't need a defensively inept defenseman. They have enough of those already. They need a solid, steady shutdown guy.

Why does a guy who was out of the league 7 days ago have value in a trade

I'd choose to let Andersson go even though I think he has the greatest chance of the 3 of being a full time NHLer I just think the other two have a higher ceiling if they work out.
So with that said are we comfortable moving forward with a D that looks like:
Giordano - Hamilton
Jokipakka - Stone
Kulak - Engelland
Kylington
I think the Flames covet Brodie right now more than they would Landeskog and IMO makes considering him not even worth the time.
|
Taylor Hall was traded for Adam Larsson. If Colorado is insisting on Brodie for Landeskog, they can have Brodie and nothing else. I don't need Landeskog on this roster that badly.

That was what I heard was the asking price on Duchene, not Landeskog.

The same reason why a 13th forward and 7th defenseman have value in trade proposals. Garbage looks better when it's smooshed together.

Loubardias on 960 says he heard Soderberg's name a few months ago linked to the Flames. But hasn't heard it since.
He also speculates that Ryan Spooner might be a fit.

Neither represents a player with edge which is what Friedman says we are looking for. Guess Lou is more dialled into the team than Eliotte. Spooner is a natural C and imagine they might use him as a trade chip for the scoring w they are looking for so imagine acquisition cost would be high. Soderberg has a stinky contract so money would have to be going the other way and not sure who he would displace at c unless you move stajan to wing.

^ He was speculating that Soderberg acquisition was to allow Bennett to go to the wing.

Spector suggested Soderberg as well in a deadline day related article (Post 1542). I laughed it off as he suggested Soderberg replace Stajan. Maybe I'm out to lunch on this one. Wouldn't be the first time.

How awful would it be to be an Avalanche fan? They are paying Carl Soderberg, Joe Colborne, Blake Comeau and John Mitchell a combined $11,450,000 and they are talking about trading Landeskog and/or Duchene.
Nate MacKinnon must have a countdown to free agency calendar on his bedroom wall.

If the Flames can get rid of Brouwer, I would be interested in Nyquist.
Maybe Brouwer for Nyquist type of deal makes sense for both teams

I get that people are down on Brouwer but do they really think the Flames are going to trade a guy they just signed in free agency in the first year of his deal? Honestly does that ever happen?
MAYBE they leave him unprotected in the expansion draft but even that is a longshot. Odds are good he's not going anywhere.

Soderberg would be a terrible pickup. 30 years old $4.75M cap hit for 3 more years. Unless he is supposed to be some kind of Backlund replacement and Backs is getting sent out for a first line RW the deal makes no sense

Yup Soderberg would be horrible.
Why the Flames refuse to give Janko a shot at the 3rd line C role is mind boggling. He may already be as good as a guy like Soderberg and is on the upswing rather than downswing. And of course just a slightly better contract
Elite teams in today's NHL have top end talent and then use young guys on ELC's to fill out many significant spots on their roster.
The Flames have a decent chunk of the top end talent but are nowhere close to figuring out the 2nd part of the equation.

If people are expecting that we'll be able to fix the hole at right wing by getting a player who is both elite and affordable, they need to change their meds. Top-line players almost never become available in trades or in free agency, and second-tier veterans are almost always overpaid.
Want a top-six forward who isn't overpaid? Then you have to draft and develop him yourself. How's the Flames prospect cupboard looking at RW?

He was an RFA. I can't think of a single instance of a UFA signing a multi year deal and getting shipped out in the first year of that deal. Maybe it has happened but it's bad business. Highly unlikely.

Ugh... Soderberg with 3 years left & costing $4.75m AAV? Why does that make me think A) it's a terrible idea and B) it's probably going to happen?
Gaudreau Monahan Versteeg (or Ferland)
Tkachuk Backlund Frolik
Bennett Soderberg Brouwer
Ferland Stajan Hathmilton
Bouma
Dunno... maybe with some salary retained Soderberg becomes the 2nd coming of Stephane Yelle?
