Stone was pretty average tonight. Calling him the most consistent defenceman against Nashville is laughable to be honest. Gio and Hamilton were much better. He sucked the less out of the other 4 though.

Still so much better than Wideman, thought he had some nervous movements but a pretty solid first game for him. Happy we got him

I thought he was ok. Kept the game simple and was defensively aware. I thought he showed some poise when pressured and is definitely an upgrade on Wideman. But his mobility definitely isn't his strongest asset though.

Stone has 1 gaff behind our net where he panicked and got forechecked pretty hard and briefly coughed up the puck but got it back. Him and Bart looked a little off to start the game but shift by shift improved.
Glad he's here and Dennis isn't playing.

First game on a new team, new system, new pairing, new coach etc.. I think he did quite good all things considering. These guys are professionals, but if you switched job locations tonight with a new boss, new system of doing your work, new colleagues etc.. would you be as productive tomorrow?
Give him a few games, I like what I see so far.

First game in a new defensive system, with a new partner. Lets give him some time.

Agreed, all I said was he wasn't the most consistent defenceman and calling him that is laughable.
He did play better than Brodie, Engelland and Bartkowski though but definitely not better than Gio and Hamilton.

I didn't notice it in this game but I am hoping that both of our recently acquired defensemen can knock guys off the puck.

I think this was a fantastic trade.
I am not at all concerned with his play so far this season. Pretty much every player who has ever played has had a bad season - especially after having a bad injury.
I am far more concerned with his overall track record. And I see a guy that has been a consistent top 4, plays PK and PP, puts up decent points, has good size, and can play the game.
I look at this as another in the long line of low risk / potential high reward trades that Treliving and the Flames have tried. Versteeg, Chiasson, Smid, Setoguchi, Galiardi, Raymond, etc. were all guys that were given a shot to see if they could raise their game.
The fact that none (other than Versteeg) really did, is irrelevant. The vast majority of these projects end up with nothing. So what? You keep doing it, knowing that sooner or later, you'll hit paydirt and get a solid NHLer to bolster your team.
Stone definitely has the potential to re-establish himself as a solid NHLer. I have a feeling he will. And I suspect that both he and Treliving want to see him back with the Flames next year.
And if that happens - if he regains his past form, and re-signs next year, this will have been a knock-it-out-of-the-park trade.
Especially when you consider how thin the Flames are currently with respect to signed Dmen for next year.

In the third there was a turnover in the neutral zone that stood out for me, because if it was Wideman it would have been an instant two on one.
Instead he turned and put on the jets and took the chance away.
Not claiming blazing speed, but more mobility than TJ Brodie is used to looking across the ice and seeing.
Good start for sure.
Any guy brought in as a 4/5 isn't going to dominate a game.

I was honestly very pleasantly surprised by Stone's ability to move around the ice.
He reminded me a bit of Monahan, just sort of always where he needed to be when he needed to be there. He was giving mike fisher fits for example, just by being hip on hip the whole time Fisher was below the hash marks.
He seems like an incredibly frustrating player to play against. Constant low-level interference.

I recall that moment as well. Caught a little flat-footed, and I thought "uh-oh", but he made the pivot and made it back in position. Not blazing fast, but given the concerns of his game, I thought the Pred would blow by him. Not so.

I only watched the OT from last night's game. How did Stone play? Was he decent or just a complete mess? 5 goals against, was he a plus player?

Ok, should have scrolled through the game thread. Has to be better than Wideman.

He was as steady as you could be considering he's had a day with the team/system.
17+ mins, 1 assist, even and had a couple of intense shifts in the D zone.
Good clears, smart conserative plays that you'd expect to see in a first game - I think as he plays more here he'll get more opportunities in different situations.

He kind of reminded me of what we want Tyler Wotherspoon to be. I'm willing to see how this turns out.
