There might be a few growing pains but Sergachev could step into that 3-4 role with Brodie next season and has all the makings of a top 2 D man in the future. I love Backlund and he is having a great year but I would trade him in a second for those two players.

I don't necessarily disagree.
As I said in my post, either Backlund or Gio should get that package.

I agree with the poster. I wouldn't consider any of our top prospects untouchable.

I read that tweet as being the standard won't mortgage the future for short term gain. Nothing to see there, nevermind morphing into a debate about what a blue chip prospect is.
It's no surprise you'd elect to argue the wording and look to nit pick / argue something that's pointless (and that you don't even necessarily believe). Yawn.

I take that trade 100/100 time. Sergachev is exactly the young defensive prospect this team needs as he has similarities to Hamilton except he actually uses his body. 0.0% chance the Canadiens trade him for Gio.
Backlund and Gallagher is a wash to me. This is Backlund's career season and I wouldn't expect him to replicate it so I'm of the opinion if you don't think you can fit in his next contract (will need to unload Brouwer at the very least) you sell high. Gallagher is younger and has some intangibles the Flames are missing in grittiness and leadership.

Sergachev has plenty of upside, but is not the player Gio is today. Still could be fair value given age and contracts, etc.
Gallagher is nowhere near Backlund IMO. How do we know this is a career year for Backlund? How do we know Gallagher didn't have a career year last year? Gallagher is a good player and he does address team needs, but why underrate Backlund? He is arguably the Flames MVP.
Maybe I need to see more of Gallagher cause what I've seen isn't enough.

That is simply not true.
One player (24 years) has 174 career points in 300 career games. ~0.6 ppg
One player (27 years) has 214 career points in 438 career games. ~0.5 ppg
Gallaghar is no slouch in his own zone either, he was being talked about Team Canada for World cup at one point last year.
Very unfair to say he's nowhere near Backlund. You might prefer Backs over Gallaghar but there will be equal number of ppl who would prefer Gallaghar.

I know everyone will say that Wideman sucks but it's funny that he's not on the list while other players equally as bad are on the list. Not having Engelland on there is mind bottling too.

It doesn't really shock me to not see Engelland on the list. I expect the Flames still want him on their bottom pairing just due to the Truculence Factor. The question is if they are able to agree on term/price. My opinion anyway.

You're doing the same thing you always do. It's as counter-productive as it is boring.

@DaCheif:
Fair points on Gallagher. I didn't realize he was so productive.
I still think given his position and his defensive play Backlund is a more valuable player, but closer than I thought.

You could argue Gallaghers tenacity/grit and awesome contract put his value higher than Backlund.

You would be wrong if you think Gallagher has higher value than Backlund.
Backlund's Selke calibre season with a great contract for another year would have him as one of the best values in the league

for one more year, then he's likely going to want north of 5 mil per and will probably never repeat a season like this one and whoever has him will be stuck paying 5 mil per for the guy we've seen for the past few years.
If Montreal offered Gallagher for Backlund, you take it. Moving forward I think it's a great deal for the Flames.

I think Backlund fetches more if put on the market.

If he does, and if management has faith in guys like Janko to step in soon and Bennett to step up, they should explore trading him...

I'd honestly rather keep Backlund. Move Bennett to the wing and ring the future with Monny, Backlund , Janko and random 4th line plug.
I've always contested Bennett was going to be a better winger. We will see but he's been at his best on the wing the whole time he's been in the NHL. It's not a slight if a guy moves to wing from Center. I honestly don't give two craps where a guy plays as long as he puts up numbers. This year's been tough for Sam Bennett. But he shouldn't be struggling this badly.
