Icon31 Kings trade Tom Gilbert to Capitals for a conditional 5th round pick

John Shannon @JSportsnet
Tom Gilbert has been traded to Washington by the Kings.

Interesting to see return, Gilbert was waived 2 weeks ago

1) #Caps have obtained D Tom Gilbert from LA for future considerations. Considerations are as follows: Kings retain 20% of Gilbert's salary.

2) If #Caps win two or more playoff rounds during the '17 playoffs and Gilbert plays in 50% or more of Caps' total playoff games

3) then #Caps will send 5th round pick in 2017 entry draft to LA. If this condition is not met, Caps won't transfer anything to Kings.

Hereinafter known as the "Kris Russell clause".

Wow. That's quite the consideration. Why did the Kings retain 280K for the long shot possibility of getting a lousy 5th rounder?

I don't think the caps getting that far is a long shot, the question is whether they play Gilbert. If one of their defenseman is banged up LA is liking getting that pick

That is a really cheap price for a pick all things considered

It is actually roughly 75k with how much of the season is left. If they have no intention of recalling Gilbert for the rest of the season, then it makes perfect accounting sense rather than paying him 100% of what is still owed.

Also gives them a little more cap room.

Just read on snet that Kings are interested in Jarome. They could be looking to clear space for him.

If Jarome doesn't win in Cgy, it would be cool to see him win with Darryl at least.

Beats paying all of his salary for a 0% chance of getting anything

This is the low cost kind of deadline move I expect Treliving to do, if he does anything at all.

Better. Unless the Flames were the team acquiring him, then people would say worse.
