This was the perfect storm for Montreal. Not surprised they pulled this off. Therrien had the team in the lead in the division, but a clear cut upgrade came along. And to boot, he speaks french. The stars don't align for the Habs like this very often. IMO they had no choice to act.

I was one of the people who thought it might be a bit ''classless'' for the Flames to fire GG so soon after he had shown clear improvements in most of the Flames' metrics, simply because a shinier toy had come along. But really, is anyone going to complain about the Habs not having any class and going after the shiny new toy? I'll bet we don't hear a peep about it.

Bergevin looked like an idiot trading away Subban earlier for an older Weber. But clearly as of this day, they have won that trade, updgraded their coaching position, got a french guy to boot, have the division lead. Maybe he's not as dumb as 99% of us fans and media thought....Bergevin has given them a clear shot at the cup and the Habs cup window is now open. Gotta respect a GM who takes high risks like that to put his team over the edge.

The guys on Fan960 were speculating yesterday that Boston might deny permission to Montreal at least to the end of the season. Guess we know the answer to that.

Now we just need a Habs/Bruins playoff series to divert our attention from Calgary finishing 9th

Montreal is a team that has had Theirren as coach for 4 1/2 seasons now.

The Flames hired GG 57 games ago.

There is your difference.
The Habs now have the elite coach they want behind the bench. There's your difference.

And it's great for them, hopefully he can help them out, but really the guy also hasn't made the playoffs the last two seasons so lets see how it plays out first.

My point more was that it's stupid and unrealistic for fans to expect the Flames to fire their new coach after 57 games just because Julien became available all of a sudden.

Would make this organization look like the biggest gong show in the NHL.

The real mistake here was that they should have made a bigger push for Boudreau when he was available, not that they didn't fire GG for Julien now.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Source says Michel Therrien wasn't informed of his firing until mid-afternoon today.

Good move by the Habs. Sure Montreal leads their division but there is a very real possibility of losing in the first round as the 1st wildcard will likely have more points than they do.

This was really, really predictable. And I think it's the right move for Montreal.

Not many opportunities to get an elite coach, and when they come up you should jump on it. Montreal did what I wish the Flames had the guts to do.

That would be solved pretty quickly if an elite coach came in and made this a really good hockey team. The Flames get no awards for being the polite franchise of the NHL.
