So the Flames posted an interview with Treliving about the trade deadline:
https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/trel...ne/c-286627430
Reading between the lines it doesn't look like the Flames are going to add a long-term defenseman. Makes sense. It also makes me wonder if the Flames have been unsure if they're sellers or buyers.

I think this is a year where they don't have to be a buyer or a seller. I'm sure they'd love to move Wideman if they could but I don't know how realistic that is. I'd be fine with a quiet deadline. If they add a RW then fine but if not no big deal.

They're right to be unsure. The next 6 or 7 games will tell them if they are going to sell or not. Right now is a tipping point in the season, if they come back from the break strong then selling would be a bad idea. If they come back and struggle the Flames might as well get all the value they can from their UFAs. As for buying, I doubt the Flames will do any no matter what, the price is always to high and not much could make the Flames serious cup contenders this year.

I really hope they're not standing still. The current season is unique and I hope the Flames take advantage of it rather than sit back and watch other teams improve. Here's how it is unique:
1) With the expansion draft, no teams are willing to take on contracts needing protection
2) Right now 27 teams are projected to have a cap hit within 5 million of the ceiling (ie, almost all teams are spending close to the cap)
3) Only 3 teams have essentially zero cap space this deadline
4) As of right now, all but four teams are within 6pts of a WC spot in their respective conference
5) The 2017 entry draft is weak, and the odds of receiving a good pick is not good (ie, most teams will part with picks)
5) Not many teams are shedding more than 13 million in UFA salary, the most being Arizona, Dallas, Calgary, San Jose, Toronto and Philly.
Due to the expansion draft, many teams are positioned to lose talent, creating more parity than ever next season. A lot of teams will not have cap flexibility next season, and not many teams will look to the draft to improve their club.
IMO, the Flames are in a good position. They could sell their UFAs with so few sellers to get picks that teams do not care about. They also have the flexibility to buy without having cap issues and protection issues.

There is the Phoenix connection for Treliving so I don't think you can rule it out but I wouldn't overpay for this guy and that's what free agency is all about see Troy Brouwer.

Ask Phoenix fans that follow that team closely and they have quite a different take on the quality of coach Tippett is.

The connection there would be Burke's most recent comments of Ryan which were not the kinds of things you'd say about a player you feel highly of, so if he does end up a Flame, it's not because of Burke.

- JANUARY 24: San Jose Sharks trade F Tommy Wingels to Ottawa Senators for F Buddy Robinson, F Zach Stortini and 2017 7th-round pick
- JANUARY 26: Tampa Bay Lightning trade D Nikita Nesterov to Montreal Canadiens for D Jonathan Racine and 2017 6th-round pic
- FEBRUARY 4: New Jersey Devils trade F Vernon Fiddler to Nashville Predators for 2017 4th-round pick
This has to be the slowest year for trades for as long as I can remember. None of the players listed have any sort of top end talent.

This is mainly due to the flat cap. Teams are unwilling to cripple their future financials anymore knowing there is no relief coming July 1st.

Flames could also take on extra players in deals as they are currently using only forty-five of their fifty contract limit.

Expansion puts a new wrench into deadline stuff as well.
Personally, I'd like Treliving to make some room for players from the farm. Playoffs or no. Boumas expendable I think. Widemans done.
I know lots of folk love Ferland but I'd like him to be moved as well. I feel we have better in Hathaway.

I'm not a huge Ferland fan and I love Hathaway, but in no universe is Hathaway better than Ferland.

Hmm, perhaps some different verbiage would clarify things. Hathaway is a better fit. Obviously Ferland has more scoring prowess. But in terms of consistent energy output. I favor Hathaway.

Ferland, Hathaway and Bouma play a physical game which also leads to injuries. Having two of them healthy at one time is all that can be expected.

But it's not usually a matter of either or, we're better served having both. Ferland can move up to the top 9 when needed, Hathaway cannot; which is much more valuable to the team.

Players are healthy scratches in the AHL for various reasons all the time. This likely means absolutely nothing.
