Yeah, at this point these guys are more or less added to a draft pick deal to balance out contracts. They're both going to be exposed in the expansion draft and at best would be considered replacement level players.

Lets not get carried away with Kulikov. an upgrade over Jokipakka, sure -- but the margin isn't that wide.

Yeah, that's just not correct.

He has 2 points in 28 games and has never been good offensively. Not sure when this potential is going to pan out because he's not good enough defensively to be making $4.5 million. He's nothing special.

I'd be pumped to get Kulikov. Always liked what I saw from him.

‘At least he's not Wideman’ is not exactly a ringing endorsement for any player.

And just because you've made a big mistake, that doesn't give you a free pass to go out and make a somewhat smaller mistake.

I'd much rather have the guy who he was traded for last summer, but he wouldn't be a terrible option in UFA. Keep the term short if you can.

If the Flames traded Jokipakka/Wotherspoon + a 4th Rounder then it could be worth the risk of exposing Kulikov in the Expansion Draft.
I believe Bennett is exempt due to age? This was also discussed on the morning show.

Morning show is wrong, they don't understand the expansion draft. They are confusing the minimum exposure requirements with which players are exposed.

This is what I thought, as I was screaming at the radio, but they were confusing me as well as they seemed to have some sort of "list" (which I really want to see) that put Bennett on the exempt list.

They were working off this:
https://www.capfriendly.com/expansion-draft

and got confused by "Players who meet or are projected to meet the exposure requirements are highlighted in green" and assumed that meant Bennett wouldn't have to be protected.

Jokipakka, 2nd and Poirier?

They get a young 3rd pairing dman, a decent pick and a prospect who could turn out in a different organization.

You probably have a better idea than most in regards to Kulikov. I'm curious, do you think he'd be the best fit on the Flames out of:

Cody Franson
6'5'' - 225lbs - RS RD
2017/18 Age: 30
Est. 2017/18 AAV: $3.75M

Michael Stone
6'3'' - 210lbs - RS RD
2017/18 Age: 27
Est. 2017/18 AAV: $4.50M

Dmitry Kulikov
6'1'' - 205lbs - LS LD
2017/18 Age: 27
Est. 2017/18 AAV: $4.50M

Karl Alzner
6'3'' - 220lbs - LS LD
2017/18 Age: 29
Est. 2017/18 AAV: $5.00M

Kris Russell
5'10'' - 170lbs - LS LD
2017/18 Age: 30
Est. 2017/18 AAV: $3.25M

Brendan Smith
6'2'' - 210lbs - LS LD
2017/18 Age: 28
Est. 2017/18 AAV: $4.00M

Just for arguments sake, at the above estimated signing values, who does everyone think would be the best fit on our 2nd pairing w/Brodie? I feel pretty confident that Treliving will sign 1 of these guys.

I'll admit I know next to nothing in regards to Smith & Kulikov, and also haven't watched Franson since he left the Leafs, so my opinion wouldn't be very valuable here.

No way Alzner only gets 5, he's looking at 6+ easily IMO

You honestly think Kulikov or Stone are going to get raises? Both are having down years with injuries. I doubt they will be 4.5 million guys. You could even see Stone take a bit less to come to Calgary with all his connections to this city (assuming he wants to leave Arizona as a free agent)

Jesus Christ, guys. I said "just for arguments sake, at the above estimated signing values". The numbers are just ballpark figures... we could argue for weeks on what we believe a pending UFA will sign for.

I just want to know, who does everyone see as the best fit on the Flames?

I would say then, without having any concern for money, Stone. I have never like Franson much and everyone else is LS LD and we need RS RD to replace Wideman/Engelland (assuming Engelland doesn’t re-sign)
